What Happened to Wheezie Cameron? The Mystery Behind Her Absence in Season 4

Outer Banks‘ prolonged focus on the Cameron family raises questions regarding Sarah’s little sister, Wheezie, and why she is missing from the show’s new season. Each part of the Netflix teen adventure series follows John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and now Cleo, as they seek a treasure in some way connected to their families. While subsequent seasons of the show extended the focus to the ancestry of the rest of the Outer Banks characters, the Cameron family has been given a great deal of attention by virtue of Ward Cameron being the show’s villain.

As Ward Cameron died in Outer Banks season 3’s ending, season 4 features Rafe and Sarah’s distanced relationship, echoing the family’s twisted and fractured relations. The fact that Ward and Rafe tried to kill Sarah in the past made it seem nearly impossible for a reconciliation to be in the cards. The Outer Banks teaser for part 2 of season 4 suggests otherwise, showing Rafe working closely with the Pogues as a self-proclaimed ally. As this continues, it’s worth wondering why Wheezie hasn’t been around.

Wheezie & Rose Cameron Seemingly Left The Outer Banks After Ward’s Death

Season 4 of Outer Banks suggests Rose took Wheezie and fled from town because she believes Sarah killed her father. This is revealed in a phone conversation between the teen and her stepmother. Sarah’s side of the call reveals Rose thinks she killed Ward and refuses to let her make contact with Wheezie. Early in the season, Rafe also expresses believing Sarah killed his dad. Whether Sarah’s little sister believes this remains unknown, as Wheezie is completely missing from season 4, part 2 of Outer Banks.

Despite being a Cameron, Wheezie has never played a key role in Outer Banks. As the little sister, she was often manipulated and lied about what was happening. Perhaps she doesn’t know what made Rose separate her from her sister. However, Wheezie has demonstrated a true loyalty to Sarah, and a talent for acquiring information due to everyone underestimating her. Because of this, it wouldn’t come as a surprise that she will come to play a part in a future storyline of Outer Banks season 4. Especially now that Rafe expressed his intentions to get his family back together.

Even if Rafe and Wheezie got along well, his main objective was always to be close to his father. With Ward gone, it makes sense Rafe didn’t try to keep Rose and Wheezie in the Outer Banks. He and his stepmother have never gotten along, and she doesn’t trust him to protect them. In a shocking twist, however, season 4 part 1 ending introduces Rafe’s desire to redeem himself, continuing his complicated character arc in the show. Drew Starkey’s character seems haunted by his past actions and confesses his determination to bring the family together, starting with making amends with Sarah.

Wheezie might not have been a key character in past seasons of Outer Banks, but the show’s heavy focus on the reconciliation of the Cameron family suggests she could still have a role to play. Wheezie could be the one to replace Ward, as the one keeping Rafe and Sarah connected. Perhaps season 4 is too soon to see the family together again, but season 5 of Outer Banks could definitely see it happen. Because of their violent history, it’s unlikely that Rafe alone could convince Sarah to trust him — that’s where his little sister could come in.

Sarah clearly desires to be close to her sister, and past seasons of Outer Banks suggest the feeling is mutual. The last time Sarah and Wheezie were together was at the end of season 2, when Rose drugged Sarah and took her on a ship to Guadeloupe. Back then, Wheezie was very happy the family was back together and off to live on an island of their own. If Rafe is serious about bringing the Camerons back together, Wheezie will definitely return, perhaps with a bigger role than before.
