Venom 3’s Confusing MCU Tease Sets Up A Marvel Trailer Trick Repeat

Morbius and Venom showing off their teeth with Spider-Man web-slinging in No Way Home's Ending

Venom: The Last Dance‘s first trailer features a puzzling connection to the MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, but it could be nothing more than a bluff. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe exists parallel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with only a little multiversal overlap thanks to Doctor Strange, who allowed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to meet his older variants in Spider-Man: No Way Home and temporarily brought Eddie Brock and Venom to the MCU’s main timeline, as shown in Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘s post-credits scene and its MCU follow-up. Whether that will change soon is still up to debate.

Eddie Brock’s brief stay in the MCU during Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene raises many questions, such as the purpose of sending Eddie to the MCU only to bring him back to his original timeline immediately afterward, the identity of the symbiote left behind, and the possibility of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man meeting Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock in the future. At this point, the only way to make this crossover happen seems to be through another multiversal conflict. Oddly enough, though, Venom: The Last Dance‘s trailer suggests that the third Venom installment will address Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene sooner than expected.

Venom 3’s Confusing MCU Retcon Could Be A Trailer Misdirection Similar To Morbius’ Trailers

MCU Symbiote In Venom 3

Venom: The Last Dance may not have to answer the questions raised by Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene, as the shot of Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character capturing the leftover symbiote could be exclusive to the Venom: The Last Dance trailer. Previously, Morbius‘ trailers included a shot of Jared Leto’s Michael Morbius walking past a mural of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man with the word “murderer” written on it, which never appeared in the actual film. The Morbius trailers’ shot of Vulture welcoming Morbius in prison was also nowhere to be seen.

If Venom: The Last Dance changes the meaning of Spider-Man: No Way Home ‘s post-credits scene, then Vulture’s appearance in Morbius ‘ post-credits scene could also be changed or disregarded by future movies.

Venom 3’s No Way Home Acknowledgment Can Only Make Things More Confusing

Overcomplicating Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Post-Credits Scene Seems Inevitable

Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene is confusing on its own. If Venom: The Last Dance actually revisits it, there doesn’t seem to be a scenario where Sony’s Spider-Man Universe can provide any helpful answers. Instead, Sony’s acknowledgment of the symbiote Eddie Brock left behind in the MCU’s Earth-616 can only create more confusion: either Venom: The Last Dance changes the original meaning of Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s Venom tease, or it renders the post-credits scene obsolete. Venom: The Last Dance can’t simply continue the original symbiote tease without having Marvel Studios and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man directly involved.

Curiously, Venom: The Last Dance could mark the second time a Marvel project featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor drops or changes a previous movie’s post-credits scene. In the MCU, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness revealed that Ejiofor’s Karl Mordo spent years fighting Doctor Strange off-screen — an unexpected payoff to Doctor Strange‘s post-credits scene, which suggested that Mordo would kill every MCU sorcerer and become Strange’s archnemesis. Similarly, Venom: The Last Dance might make drastic changes to Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene, and in turn affect Spider-Man 4‘s possible plot.
