One new Deadpool & Wolverine reveal means Ryan Reynolds can finally redeem a major aspect of his previous, hated version of the merc-with-a-mouth.

Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson's Deadpool in X-Men Origins Wolverine and in the MCU

One new Deadpool & Wolverine reveal means that Ryan Reynolds’ Merc-with-a-Mouth can finally redeem his coolest weapon from his most hated X-Men entry, 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds is set to return as Wade Wilson’s Deadpool in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, bringing his mutant mercenary into the MCU proper following the finalization of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. The 2024 project will mark Ryan Reynolds’ fourth feature film appearance as Deadpool, having previously starred in X-Men Origins: Wolverine before reinventing the antihero in 2016’s Deadpool and its 2018 sequel, Deadpool 2.

While Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool has become celebrated since he brought a more comic-accurate depiction of the character to the big screen in Deadpool, his original version of the Merc-with-a-Mouth was much less favorable. 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine remains as one of the weakest links in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, and the project’s depiction of Wade Wilson’s Deadpool – named Weapon XI in the movie – contributed massively to this scrutiny. Despite this, elements of Ryan Reynolds’ X-Men Origins: Wolverine character were exciting, and one of the best will return in the MCU’s Deadpool & Wolverine, as confirmed by the recent CInemaCon footage.

Deadpool Has Adamantium Swords In Deadpool & Wolverine

The CinemaCon footage confirmed Wade Wilson’s powerful upgrades in Deadpool & Wolverine as ‘Pool is gifted swords crafted from adamantium in the MCU’s Phase 5. In Marvel Comics, the man-made metal alloy adamantium is most notably known as the material that was grafted onto Wolverine’s skeleton, transforming his bone claws into sharp blades. Adamantium hasn’t yet been seen or mentioned in the MCU, but Deadpool & Wolverine is set to change this, not only with Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine, but perhaps also with upgrades made to Deadpool’s own arsenal, courtesy of the Time Variance Authority.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s first trailer confirmed that Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson will be gifted an entirely new superhero costume by the TVA. After presumably being recruited by the TVA, the multiversal organization kits him out in a brighter suit, fitted with new weapons. Subsequent footage shown in Las Vegas confirmed that includes new adamantium swords, which will give Deadpool the chance to redeem his blades from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, as adamantium swords were implanted into his arms, functioning similarly to Wolverine’s claws. These weapons were admittedly pretty cool, but completely wasted in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, so Deadpool & Wolverine can finally do them justice.

Will Deadpool Fight Wolverine In Deadpool & Wolverine?

The idea that Deadpool is getting adamantium swords in Deadpool & Wolverine seems to suggest that he’d be tasked with fighting someone too powerful for conventional metals. This seems to hint at Deadpool battling Wolverine in the MCU’s Phase 5, which may have been supported by the final moments of Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailer, which saw the pair sparring among the ruins of the 20th Century Fox logo. This could even recreate the fight between Wolverine and Weapon XI in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, allowing Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine to redeem many aspects of the failed 2009 X-Men installment.
