Black Panther’s upcoming MCU series could introduce a Wakanda hero who assembled one of Marvel Comics’ most unique versions of the Avengers.
Black Panther’s new MCU series, Eyes of Wakanda, may introduce one character known for assembling a special team of Avengers. The MCU’s upcoming animated series Eyes of Wakanda, which will explore various eras of the fictional African kingdom, is unique in that it takes place throughout the MCU’s chronological timeline within the franchise’s main universe — Earth-616. Therefore, every reveal about the MCU’s past will likely be relevant to the MCU’s live-action movies and shows as well.
Phase 1’s The Avengers and Phase 3’s Captain Marvel established the origins of the Avengers Initiative. According to these movies, Nick Fury was inspired by Carol Danvers’ victory over her Kree oppressors to assemble a team of superheroes, who revealed themselves to the world almost simultaneously. The original Avengers aren’t the MCU’s only superhero team, however, as groups like the Midnight Sons and the MCU’s approaching Young Avengers also have their own spin on the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes concept. Now, Eyes of Wakanda could introduce a unique version of the Avengers who predate Iron Man and Captain America’s squad by millennia.
Eyes Of Wakanda Can Introduce The MCU’s First Black Panthers, Bashenga And Mosi
Eyes of Wakanda will take place across multiple different eras of Wakanda, following various different characters who, according to the series’ synopsis, will “travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts”. Given that Eyes of Wakanda will introduce multiple Wakandan warriors that preceded T’Chaka and T’Challa, it’s possible that Wakanda’s first-ever Black Panther Bashenga will make his on-screen MCU debut in the animated Disney+ series after being mentioned by Killmonger’s father, Prince N’Jobu, in Black Panther.
“Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story.”
In both Marvel Comics and the MCU, Bashenga creates the Cult of the Black Panther around the vibranium-laced meteor that crashes in Wakanda eons before the present day. Bashenga becomes the first warrior to communicate with the Panther goddess Bast and ingest the heart-shaped herb, developing peak-human strength, speed, endurance, and reflexes. As the first Black Panther, Bashenga unites Wakanda’s tribes and hides the kingdom from the rest of the world, this starting a long lineage of Wakandan leaders and warriors under the moniker of the Black Panther.
Another Wakandan warrior who could star in Eyes of Wakanda could be Mosi, an early Black Panther who succeeded Bashenga. In the comics, Mosi comes into contact with a visiting Odin, whose Mjolnir ends up in Mosi’s hands. Impressed by this feat, Odin befriends Mosi and chooses him as one of the founding members of his team of Earth-based superheroes, created hundreds of thousands of years before Thor first crosses paths with the Avengers in the modern day.
Bashenga and Mosi’s MCU Debut Could Involve The Prehistoric Avengers
Mosi helps Odin assemble the first iteration of the Avengers in Marvel Comics’ whole timeline: “Avengers 1,000,000 B.C.” A million years before the present day, Odin, Mosi, and other prehistoric heroes join forces to fight Zgreb the Aspirant, a Celestial who gets infested by a species of parasitic insect monsters called “the Horde”. The Stone Age Avengers also include the first Sorcerer Supreme Agamotto, and eventually, the first Moon Knight a.k.a. the First Fist of Khonshu.Together, these prehistoric Avengers defeat both the Horde-infested Celesital Zgreb and the Eternal Ajak, who resurrects and then requests Arishem the Judge — one of the 11 Celestials to have already appeared in the MCU — to spare the heroes. The prehistoric Avengers also fight Loki’s father Laufey and time-travelling villains like Doctor Doom and Mephisto before parting ways and reassembling throughout the years. Eventually, each of the Avengers 1,000,000 B.C. pass on the torch to new heroes, including Odin, who shifts his focus to ruling Asgard and the Nine Realms, as well as taking care of his son, Thor.
The MCU’s Prehistoric Avengers Could Set Up Three New Heroes In The Modern Day
Mosi, Odin, Agamotto, and Moon Knight aren’t the only members of the Avengers 1,000,000 B.C. Firehair, the earliest known host of the Phoenix Force, is the individual who first comes up with the idea to gather the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to protect the planet should the Phoenix Force or other dangerous forces threaten it. Firehair and Odin also recruit an early host of the Spirit of Vengeance a.k.a Ghost Rider, as well as Fan Fei, the world’s first Iron Fist.
Eyes of Wakanda could reveal the existence of the Avengers 1,000,000 B.C. through Bashenga and Mosi’s animated MCU introduction. However, the series likely wouldn’t spend too much time on the prehistoric team of Avengers. Still, a cameo appearance by heroes like Firehair, Fan Fei, and Ghost Rider would lay the foundations for the MCU introduction of present-day heroes like Jean Grey, Danny Rand, Colleen Wing, Johnny Blaze, and Robbie Reyes, whose origins would be clearly established within the MCU’s continuity.
Note: Of these characters, only Jean Grey hasn’t appeared in a non- X-Men MCU-adjacent project.
Agamotto and the First Fist of Khonshu would also expand Stephen Strange and Marc Spector’s MCU lore. Marvel’s Agamotto becomes the first Sorcerer Supreme, fights Dormammu, and wields the legendary Eye of Agamotto, which he may instead design to hold the Time Stone in the MCU. Meanwhile, the First Fist of Khonshu is the first humanoid to be chosen by the Egyptian God Khonshu to serve as his avatar, trailblazing a long line of Moon Knights who receive enhanced abilities and a connection to the Ennead.
Eyes Of Wakanda’s Prehistoric Avengers Can Tie Perfectly Into The MCU’s Cosmic Stories
While Eyes of Wakanda may not delve into Mosi’s adventures with the Avengers 1,000,000 B.C., a brief look at his interactions with cosmic characters like Odin, the Phoenix Force, the Celestials, and the Eternals would gel with the MCU’s cosmic stories. Odin’s relationship with Midgard would be further developed, Jean Grey’s MCU story could be set up long before her own MCU debut, and the Eternals and the Celestials would have a chance to appear again in an earlier part of the timeline than the events of Chloé Xhao’s Eternals, in the absence of a proper Eternals sequel or prequel.
The MCU could play with these cosmic characters in Eyes of Wakanda, even if it doesn’t entail introducing the Avengers 1,000,000. Having important figures such as Bashenga, Mosi, Odin, Khonshu, Agamotto, the Eternals, and the Celestials, coexisting at some point in the MCU’s ancient past is an untapped goldmine waiting to be explored. Not to mention, the extraterrestrial origin of Wakanda’s vibranium and the origin of the Black Panthers and the mystic arts, as well as a previous lifetime of the Eternals, are perfect ideas to examine in an animated MCU series where such ambitious concepts don’t require a higher budget.
