The MCU’s Multiverse Saga has already explored many alternate realities, but there are many more in Marvel Comics that would be great in live-action.
Marvel Studios’ Multiverse Saga has already explored many alternate realities, but some of the most exciting ones from Marvel Comics haven’t yet been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the conclusion of the MCU’s Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 slate kicked off the Multiverse Saga. Projects such as Loki, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels have already explored alternate universes and variant heroes, and this is only expected to develop further as the MCU heads towards Phase 6’s highly-anticipated Avengers crossover projects.
The concept of the multiverse has always been integral in Marvel Comics, and this has been put on full display in the live-action MCU’s recent adventures. However, while projects such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness explored many alternate universes, there are many more in Marvel Comics that haven’t yet been adapted for the MCU. The investigation of some of these exciting new worlds could have a huge impact on the MCU, and though some may be more likely to be seen than others, Marvel Studios should make the most of the multiverse before the MCU moves on.
10. Old Man Logan’s Earth-807128
Earth-807128 Turns The Marvel Universe On Its Head
Marvel Comics’ Earth-807128 is a universe in which the supervillains of the world united and achieved world domination, dividing the Earth into several defined territories. Most notably, this is the reality which Old Man Logan inhabits, and this storyline formed the basis of 20th Century Fox’s celebrated Logan movie in 2017, which was then Hugh Jackman’s final adventure as Wolverine. The heroes of Earth-807128 soon banded together as the Fantastic Force, taking back control, and the surviving heroes later traveled to Earth-616 and were gifted a new world to reside in.
Despite retiring from the role of Wolverine after Logan, Hugh Jackman will be returning as the X-Men member in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
Why Old Man Logan’s Earth-807128 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
Old Man Logan’s storyline may have already been loosely adapted into live-action, but Marvel Studios could explore Earth-807128 in much more detail. This barren landscape would be a stark contrast to the current world of the MCU. However, this would allow more hardened and seasoned variants of the MCU’s heroes to debut, creating the opportunity for some dramatic interactions.
9. Marvel’s Dark Ages’ Earth-TRN891
Dark Ages Stripped The Marvel Universe Of Its Advanced Technologies
After a huge battle between the world’s heroes and an ancient evil ends in an EMP destroying anything electrical, the Marvel Universe was thrust back to the Dark Ages on Earth-TRN891. Years later, Marvel’s heroes managed to rebuild the world without technology, creating an apocalyptic world that transformed many superheroes into darker figures. Marvel Comics’ Dark Ages universe introduced a world very different to the one readers had been familiar with, and this would be brilliant to explore in the MCU.
Why Marvel’s Dark Ages’ Earth-TRN891 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
With the rise in advanced technology and artificial intelligence already a prominent fear in the MCU (and in the real world), Marvel Studios exploring the Dark Ages universe would be a bold move. This could perhaps play off Avengers: Age of Ultron’s storyline, with the Avengers perhaps eradicating technology to defeat Ultron. Introducing the darker heroes of the Dark Ages would be a great juxtaposition to the lighthearted MCU.
8. The Uncanny Life Of Moira X’s Alternate Timelines
Moira MacTaggert’s Mutant Power Creates Many Alternate Timelines
During 2019’s House of X and Powers of X events, prominent X-Men supporting character Moira MacTaggert was retconned to be a mutant in the Marvel Universe. Moira’s mutation allows her to start over as a baby every time she dies, while retaining the memories of her past lives. These past lives were displayed as a variety of alternate timelines, as she would change the world each time. She became a gifted scientist, formed her own mutant nation, lived into the distant future, and partnered with Magneto and Apocalypse.
Why The Uncanny Life Of Moira X’s Alternate Timelines Would Be Great To See In The MCU
Moira MacTaggert hasn’t appeared in the MCU, but the exploration of her lives could be key in introducing the MCU’s X-Men team. It could be explained that Moira changing the world eradicated the X-Men, answering why they haven’t appeared yet. Should she debut in the Multiverse Saga, and her lives are explored, Moira could bring the X-Men into the MCU en masse.
7. Age Of Apocalypse’s Earth-295
Charles Xavier’s Death Created A New Timeline In Marvel Comics
1995’s Age of Apocalypse timeline began when Legion traveled back in time to kill Magneto, but accidentally killed his own father, Professor X. This changed the future significantly, allowing Apocalypse to achieve world domination and alter every subsequent event. Several teams of mutant heroes opposed him, including one led by Magneto, until Bishop was sent back in time to prevent Charles Xavier’s murder. This was an intricate and complex storyline, but would be great to see in the MCU.
Why Age Of Apocalypse’s Earth-295 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
Marvel Studios’ potential Age of Apocalypse adaptation, similarly to Moira MacTaggert’s many lives, could also explain where the X-Men have been in the MCU. The MCU could currently be exploring a reality in which Legion has already changed the world, hampering the evolution of mutants before it began. A future storyline could feature MCU heroes traveling through time to set the world straight, introducing a huge number of mutants very quickly.
6. Days Of Future Past’s Earth-811
Fox’s Days Of Future Past Adaptation Was Praised
Published in 1981, Marvel Comics’ Days of Future Past explored a dystopian future in which mutants have been incarcerated in internment camps. In the comics, Kitty Pryde sends her consciousness into her younger self to change this timeline, though in Fox’s live-action adaptation, 2014’s celebrated X-Men: Days of Future Past, Pryde uses her newfound ability to send Wolverine’s consciousness back in time to halt the development of the Sentinels. Days of Future Past is regarded as one of the strongest X-Men stories in history.
X-Men: Days of Future Past earned $746 million at the global box office, making it the third-highest-grossing movie in Fox’s X-Men franchise, behind Deadpool and Deadpool 2.
Why Days Of Future Past’s Earth-811 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
Since Fox already delivered a strong adaptation of Days of Future Past, it’s possible Marvel Studios may avoid adapting it again. However, there were elements of Days of Future Past’s story that Fox neglected to explore, so the MCU’s X-Men team could examine it more closely. This would be great to see in a few years once the X-Men have been properly established in the MCU.
5. Earth-X’s Earth-9997
Earth-9997 Is A Dark Marvel Comics Timeline
Marvel Comics’ Earth X series established a new world where almost everyone on Earth had obtained superpowers, making notable heroes such as Captain America, Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk irrelevant, as superhuman abilities were commonplace. This event was caused when Black Bolt, the Inhuman King, dispersed the Terrigen Mists into Earth’s atmosphere, transforming the world’s population. This was an expansive storyline that included practically every hero in Marvel’s history.
Why Earth-X’s Earth-9997 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
Earth X would be a very interesting alternate world to explore in the MCU, especially since it could enable a powerful introduction for the Inhumans. Marvel Television’s Inhumans series failed the titular species, and Anson Mount’s Black Bolt unfortunately lost his life in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, adapting Earth X for the MCU could bring Inhumans into the MCU on a global scale, and make them instant and major players in the wider world of the MCU.
4. Marvel 2099’s Earth-928
2099’s Earth Provides A Glimpse Into The Future
The Marvel 2099 imprint ran between 1992 and 1999, and included futuristic variations of many of Marvel Comics’ heroes and villains. Characters such as Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, the Punisher, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Ghost Rider and the X-Men were all given 2099 variants, making this a hugely expansive universe that would be great to explore in the MCU. Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse saw Oscar Isaac voice Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099, which may allow the MCU to crossover with this other popular Marvel franchise.
Why Marvel 2099’s Earth-928 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
Marvel 2099 explored the world of the future, which hasn’t really been investigated in the current slate of the MCU. The multiversal storylines expected for Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars could bring the MCU’s heroes into this vibrant and exhilarating potential future. Introducing futuristic variants of some of the MCU’s most popular heroes would be a great way to flesh out the multiverse fully.
3. Marvel Zombies’ Earth-2149
Marvel Zombies Will Be Explored In Animation
Marvel Studios may have already explored Marvel Zombies in Phase 4’s What If…? season 1, episode 5, and in the upcoming animated Marvel Zombies series, but the storyline is yet to be seen in live-action. Marvel Zombies explored the world of Earth-2149, where much of the world’s population had been infected with a zombie virus. Zombified superheroes and villains retained their abilities and some semblance of sentience, making them a huge threat, and this would be incredible to see play out in live-action.
Why Marvel Zombies’ Earth-2149 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
2. House Of M’s Earth-58163
House Of M Is One Of The Biggest Mutant-Focused Storylines
Marvel Comics’ House of M was an alternate reality created by the Scarlet Witch and Professor X, hoping to give the New Avengers and the X-Men their hearts’ desires. Mutants became the dominant species on Earth, while “sapiens” were deemed to be inferior. This storyline proved the raw power of the Scarlet Witch, though her mental state unravels even further throughout the series. House of M ends with the Scarlet Witch uttering those infamous words: “No more mutants,” which leaves thousands of mutants depowered.
Why House Of M’s Earth-58163 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
House of M is one of Marvel Comics’ most memorable and notable storylines, so must be adapted into the live-action MCU at some point. Elements of this storyline were already used to inform the events of WandaVision, which saw Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff create a sitcom-style world around Westview, New Jersey. However, with the X-Men soon set to debut in the MCU, an honest-to-goodness House of M adaptation may be on the cards.
Some theories have suggested House of M may have already happened in the MCU, answering why there have been very few mutants introduced.
1. Ultimate Marvel’s Earth-1610
Ultimate Marvel Changed The Origins Of Many Marvel Heroes
Ultimate Marvel is perhaps the most well-known alternate reality in Marvel Comics, as the 15-year-long series explored variant heroes, origin stories, villains and events taking place on Earth-1610, rather than Earth-616. The Ultimate Universe was prominently featured as an incursion universe in 2015’s Secret Wars event, which creates the perfect opportunity for it to be seen in the MCU. Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise focuses on a version of Earth-1610, but the universe is yet to be seen in live-action.
Why Ultimate Marvel’s Earth-1610 Would Be Great To See In The MCU
With Avengers: Secret Wars set to release in 2027, it would make sense for Marvel Studios to explore Earth-1610. This could finally bring characters such as Miles Morales’ Spider-Man, Reed Richards’ Maker and potentially the Ultimate X-Men into the MCU. Ultimate Marvel has influenced many aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe already, but it would be great to explore this alternate reality in more detail.
