Daredevil: Born Again has gone back to the The Defenders Saga canon, and some specific Netflix characters returning in the series would be exciting.
Daredevil: Born Again is bringing back multiple characters from Netflix’s Daredevil, and the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series could be how many more players from The Defenders Saga return. Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk were the first characters from Daredevil‘s three seasons to come back after the show was canceled, with Cox making a cameo in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and D’Onofrio being the surprise villain of Disney+’s Hawkeye in the same year.
Both actors will come back as their iconic Marvel characters to lead Daredevil: Born Again‘s cast. The highly-anticipated series has recently finished filming its first batch of episodes. The show underwent a major creative overhaul, which saw The Punisher‘s Dario Scardapane be brought in to oversee Daredevil: Born Again‘s story as its showrunner. Among the changes made, the series saw the return of Netflix characters like Bullseye, Karen Page, and Foggy Nelson. With the Netflix Marvel shows now MCU canon, Daredevil: Born Again can bring back more characters from The Defender Saga.
10. Trish Walker
Her Last Location Is Meaningful
Rachael Taylor played Trish Walker in Netflix’s Jessica Jones. The character went through quite the arc over the show’s three seasons, with Trish starting as Jessica’s best friend in season 1, killing the hero’s mother in Jessica Jones season 2, and descending into a path of madness and extreme vigilantism in Jessica Jones season 3. At the end of the show, Trish was on a very different path from where she started.
Trish Walker was taken to the Raft for her actions as the vigilante Hellcat. The Raft has been featured across the MCU, with the underwater prison being most famously known as the location where Captain America broke out Sam Wilson and other heroes at the end of Captain America: Civil War. Trish’s return in Daredevil: Born Again could reintroduce the Raft to the MCU, perhaps through a prison break that brings back Helmut Zemo and other villains.
9. Ward Meachum
The Character Shined In A Controversial Series
Iron Fist was easily the most controversial of the Marvel shows on Netflix. Despite its uneven run, the series did manage to include a few consistently good characters — and one of them was Tom Pelphrey’s Ward Meachum. After some needed character development, Ward went from a selfish person to one of the most charismatic characters in The Defenders Saga, embarking on a journey with Danny Rand to find out more about the legacy of the Iron Fist.
As Iron Fist was canceled just as the show was getting good — one of the harsh realities of The Defenders Saga — fans could not watch Ward fully soar as one of the good guys. Pelphrey’s Ward could return in Daredevil: Born Again in relation to Kingpin’s mayoral run, perhaps going up against him as a candidate or showing how the villain is affecting major companies, such as Rand Enterprises.
8. Brett Mahoney
The Character Makes Sense For A Rumored Storyline
Detective Sergeant Brett Mahoney was a popular recurring character in Netflix’s Daredevil series. The character was an honest cop among several who were on Kingpin’s payroll, with Mahoney assisting both Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson with their cases, as well as Daredevil, to keep New York City safe from Wilson Fisk, the Hand, and others.
Mahoney would fit right in with a story that is rumored to be part of Daredevil’s new MCU series. Recently, Daredevil: Born Again set photos made a theory more likely, with the first look at Mayor Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force, which includes many police officers. The Punisher’s return in the series is also rumored to be in relation to corrupt cops misusing his logo. As an honest cop, Mahoney’s point of view would be exciting, providing an inside look at the crumbling of NYC’s police under Fisk’s rule.
7. Claire Temple
The Character Was The Glue Of The Defenders Saga
While some of the main heroes in The Defenders Saga crossed over to other shows besides just The Defenders crossovers series, none of the four characters — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand — were in all four main The Defenders Saga series. However, there is a character who did appear in all of them — Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple.
Claire became known as someone vigilantes could go to get stitched up without a lot of questions. Since Daredevil: Born Again is bringing back multiple characters from Netflix’s Daredevil — the show where Claire first appeared — it would make sense for Claire to be included. Adding to that, with Kingpin likely outlawing vigilantes in the series, Claire Temple would be a major help for the heroes of New York City as they continue to oppose Fisk in the shadows.
6. Misty Knight
The Character Could Then Get A Spinoff Series
The Defenders Saga still had many plans that had to be abandoned when Netflix canceled its Marvel shows. Due to that, fans never got to see the full potential of several characters, one of them being Simone Missick’s Misty Knight. The character started as a cop, losing her arm in a fight with the villain Bakuto, and then being torn about becoming a police captain or not.
The Netflix Marvel shows were canceled before Misty answered the captain job offer, though it was hinted that she might have teamed up with Colleen Wing instead. Daredevil: Born Again could include Misty Knight in two very different ways, depending on what the creatives choose. Misty could be a police captain trying to do good despite Fisk being mayor, or she could be part of a vigilante duo on the run with Colleen.
5. Danny Rand/Iron Fist
Danny Rand’s Return Has Been Teased
As Danny Rand was the most controversial of the four main heroes of The Defenders Saga, with the character facing criticism both in The Defenders and Iron Fist, his MCU return is the least likely of the main heroes. However, Finn Jones has teased his return as Iron Fist recently. Despite Danny’s criticized past, there is a path for the character if he comes back to the MCU.
Jones’ Danny Rand showed improvement during Iron Fist season 2 and the character’s role in Luke Cage season 2. Iron Fist coming back in Daredevil: Born Again could lead to the hero finally being at his best in the MCU, with a possible Heroes for Hire project alongside Luke Cage. Continuing from Iron Fist season 2’s ending, Danny could also permanently pass the Iron Fist mantle to Colleen Wing or another character.
4. Colleen Wing
The Character Could Become The MCU’s Iron Fist
While Danny Rand might have been far from his top form in The Defenders Saga, one Iron Fist character remained consistently good for the duration of the show’s run. That character was Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing, who ended her arc in the series as the MCU’s Iron Fist after Danny gave her his power and traveled with Ward Meachum to Asia to learn about the legacy of the Iron Fist and himself.
While the move seemed to be temporary, as Danny Rand is pretty much synonymous with the Iron Fist, Colleen Wing could be brought back in Daredevil: Born Again as the MCU’s Iron Fist. Henwick made the character charismatic and fierce, with Colleen Wing being an expert hand-to-hand fighter whose fight scenes looked better than Danny’s. Colleen’s return could also lead to the Daughters of the Dragon project with Misty Knight that had been teased.
3. Elektra
The Character Is Important To Daredevil
It is true that Elodie Yung’s Elektra is technically dead. The character was brought back to life by the Hand to serve as its lethal weapon, Black Sky. However, Elektra broke free from her conditioning, killed the Hand’s Alexandra Reid, and was last seen kissing Daredevil as the Midland Circle building collapsed on top of them. While Daredevil season 3 showed Matt Murdock lived, Elektra was never found.
Given her connection to Matt and how Yung would like to return as Elektra, the character would be a great return in Daredevil: Born Again. As someone who has been in the same kind of danger as Matt and even came back from the dead once, Elektra could easily be alive in the MCU. Besides, Daredevil: Born Again seems to be adapting “Devil’s Reign,” a story that had Elektra don the Daredevil mantle.
2. Luke Cage
The Character Could Be A Friend Or A Foe
Luke Cage was not always the best character in his series, with both Cottonmouth and Misty Knight taking the spot at times. However, the character was still greatly acted by Mike Colter, and the star could return in Daredevil: Born Again to right a Netflix wrong. While all The Defenders Saga shows were hurt by the Netflix cancelations, Luke Cage season 2 ended on the biggest cliffhanger of them all.
While the character had mostly been a hero, Luke Cage season 2 teased a possible villain turn for Colter’s MCU character. Luke’s latest appearance saw him take over Harlem’s Paradise as the new crime boss, though the plan was to keep Harlem safe by controlling crime, not becoming evil. With Kingpin becoming NYC’s mayor in Daredevil: Born Again, Luke Cage would have to deal with the character.
1. Jessica Jones
The Character’s Return Makes The Most Sense
Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, like Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, led a solo series for three seasons. The actress was pitch-perfect in the role, making Jessica a compelling character who had more to her than just her hardened exterior. As the next most popular main character of The Defenders Saga after Daredevil and the Punisher, Jessica Jones would be the most logical addition to the MCU if more Netflix characters are coming back.
Ritter and Cox had great chemistry in The Defenders, with the characters getting paired up early in the series. Daredevil: Born Again could once again bring that relationship to the forefront. The character has been rumored to appear in the series for some time, with Ritter teasing her Jessica Jones return. Daredevil’s connection to She-Hulk — one of Jessica’s best friends in the comics — could also play a role in their possible reunion in Daredevil: Born Again.
