Tom Hiddleston has commented on the chances of Loki season 3 happening, and the character’s best possible MCU future is now looking more likely.
Following Tom Hiddleston’s comments about Loki season 3’s status, the best possible future for his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has just received some good news. From the original Thor movie to becoming the main villain of the Avengers to teaming up with his brother to dying against Thanos, the MCU’s original Loki went through quite a lot. Then, Avengers: Endgame introduced a new Loki variant, with Disney+’s Loki developing the character for two seasons, making Loki’s MCU timeline quite eventful over the span of more than a decade.
Loki is Marvel Studios’ only live-action series to have more than one season — though Daredevil: Born Again is set to repeat that feat in the future. The series stands as the biggest project in the Multiverse Saga, as it did the most to establish the concept of the multiverse, what variants are, the threat Kang the Conqueror and his variants pose, and more. Despite Loki season 2’s ending serving as the perfect finale for the series, fans still want the character to return, and Hiddleston’s thoughts on a potential season 3 show the path Loki should take if he returns.
Tom Hiddleston Reiterates Loki Season 2’s Narrative Conclusion
Season 3 Happening Is Unlikely
Loki season 2 ended with a status update for its lead hero. Hiddleston’s Loki got a major power boost, with the character becoming the MCU’s God of Stories, sitting alone at the Citadel at the End of Time to keep the multiverse safe. Instead of actively controlling the different universes, Loki’s job is to solely watch the universes as they bloom, protecting them from harm. This was a bittersweet ending for the show and the character, as Loki saved the multiverse but saw his greatest fear come true — he will forever be alone.
Due to that tragic ending, many fans have asked for Loki season 3 to happen, showing how Loki and his friends could reunite. Recently, Hiddleston commented on Loki season 3’s chances. The actor revealed that he does not know what is in store for Loki in the MCU’s future. However, Hiddleston said that, to him, the team behind the series “reached some sort of narrative conclusion with season 2,” which satisfies the actor. The show accomplished what it set out to do, giving a fitting ending to Loki, Sylvie, Mobius, and even the Kang variants who appeared.
Why Loki’s Best MCU Future Is Not On TV
There Is Little Left For Him To Do
While it would always be exciting to get more of Hiddleston as Loki for multiple episodes, narrative-wise, Loki season 3 is not the MCU future for the character that makes sense. After season 2, the series’ arc for Loki has been completed, and a new kind of story could come to cement Loki’s final chapter in the MCU. With a reboot of the franchise rumored to happen after 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, Hiddleston could come back as Loki for a couple more projects before closing the door on the role for good.
Loki’s best MCU future would come in the form of an important role in the two upcoming Avengers movies — The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. Loki’s MCU arc is pretty much over; however, the character could come full circle by being one of the key heroes of the Avengers movies after having served as the villain of 2012’s The Avengers. Given his role of watching over the multiverse, the Council of Kangs could go after Loki to take his place and control the multiverse. Loki teaming up with Thor again and stopping the Kangs would be his perfect MCU ending.
How Loki Season 3 Could Still Happen (Without Ruining Loki’s Ending)
Disney+ Could Offer A Solution
While Hiddleston’s Loki might not return on Disney+, a spiritual Loki season 3 could happen, bringing back characters from the MCU series. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Loki executive producer Kevin Wright teased the potential of spinoffs. Wright compared Loki to Breaking Bad to comment on how that acclaimed series had an equally beloved spinoff — Better Call Saul — and that the MCU could do the same for Loki. The executive producer mentioned Sylvie, the TVA, and a new Loki variant as possible focus points for spinoffs.
Now that she is free to do as she pleases, following Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie in the MCU could be exciting. The character emerged as a fan favorite in the show and has the strength to helm a spinoff on her own. As a Loki variant, Sylvie could even be used to continue the series as Loki season 3, only shifting the focus to Di Martino’s character, with Owen Wilson’s Mobius and other players from the TVA possibly appearing, while Hiddleston’s Loki ends his time in the Phase 6 Avengers movies instead of Loki season 3.
