Tom Hiddleston explains that his emotional final line in the Loki season 2 finale actually has a long history in the MCU, referencing Loki’s past.
Loki season 2’s excellent finale just got even more emotional thanks to MCU star Tom Hiddleston’s explanation of his last line in the series. The Loki season 2 ending sees the God of Mischief finally making a noble sacrifice, and putting the good of others ahead of himself. Adding more weight to the moment, the line is tied to an earlier Loki moment from the MCU.
When speaking with Vanity Fair, Loki star Tom Hiddleston revealed how deeply connected his final line was to Loki’s first MCU appearance. Hiddleston explained that the line echoes Loki’s final line in Thor, showing how much the character has grown. Hiddleston’s comments can be seen below:
And I remembered the end of the first Thor film, and how emotional that felt and. I just suddenly thought, that’s what he should say—but it should mean something completely different. Loki’s last line in Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh, is, ‘I could have done it, Father. I could have done it for you, for all of us.’ And of course his effort to gain his father’s pride has been misguided and ill thought-out. And then at the end of Loki season 2, 14 years later, he turns to Mobius and Sylvie and says, ‘I know what I want I know what kind of god I need to be. For you. For all of us.’ It felt very resonant somehow. I hope the audience picked up on that.
Loki showed one of the strongest character arcs in the MCU, and Hiddleston has made it clear that Loki’s final line was meant to demonstrate this growth to the audience.
Why Loki’s Last Line In The Loki Season 2 Finale Is Perfect
Loki’s Last Line Brings The God’s MCU Storyline Full Circle
What makes Loki’s final line in Loki season 2 so perfect is the way it shows the character’s growth throughout his 14-year run in the MCU. Loki started the MCU jealous of Thor, and he wanted to seize power to prove to his father, Odin, that he could be a better King of Asgard. This led Loki to make some big mistakes and even become a major villain in the early MCU.
Loki’s decision at the end of Loki season 2 is truly made with everyone’s best interest in mind.
When Loki initially claimed that he could have helped all of Asgard, he was wrong. However, in Loki season 2, when he tells Sylvie and Mobius that he can help the entire multiverse, he’s right. Importantly, what Loki was doing in the first Thor movie was trying to seize power for himself. Loki’s final words may mirror his reasoning behind this, but his actions are now selfless. Loki’s decision at the end of Loki season 2 is truly made with everyone’s best interest in mind, showing that Loki has finally learned to put others before himself.
