Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has been revealed to appear in new Deadpool & Wolverine footage, and that could set up Avengers: Secret Wars in a major way.
Following the confirmation that Thor will appear in Deadpool and Wolverine, a new Marvel Cinematic Universe theory reveals how Avengers: Secret Wars could be repeating a major trick from Avengers: Endgame. The MCU has left the Avengers to the side for a bit, with the team not showing up since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The MCU’s Phases 4 and 5 do not feature a single movie for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes; however, Phase 6 will change that in a major way with two Avengers films — The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.
Deadpool & Wolverine has been teasing Avengers: Secret Wars‘ thrilling plot in different ways. The Deadpool film included an intriguing Easter egg in its trailer, with a scene showing Deadpool lying down in the Void next to an issue from the 2015 Secret Wars comic book event. Adding to that, PSA-like Deadpool & Wolverine footage from CinemaCon included Deadpool saying “So, I heard Secret Wars is finally gonna introduce…“ before a phone cut him off. With those teases and the reveal of Thor’s cameo, the movie could be setting up Avengers: Secret Wars to repeat an iconic Avengers: Endgame moment.
Thor’s Deadpool & Wolverine Scene Can Set Up An Avengers: Secret Wars Sacrifice
Shockingly, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor was confirmed to have a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine thanks to the movie’s CinemaCon footage. As seen in the trailer, agent Paradox will show Deadpool many different moments from the MCU at the TVA, and one of those is a scene that has yet to happen with Deadpool and Thor. The Deadpool & Wolverine footage featured a scene where Thor is crying while holding Deadpool, with Wade Wilson dying and half of his mask having been ripped off. Paradox said Deadpool was not supposed to see the moment from the “distant future.”
Avengers: Secret Wars seems like the best place for that moment to happen, based on Paradox’s description and the Deadpool & Wolverine teases of the Multiverse Saga’s finale. Thor and Deadpool are two characters from very different worlds, and the duo coming together would be a major event reserved for the upcoming Avengers films. That way, it seems like Deadpool & Wolverine could be setting up a major moment for Avengers: Secret Wars, with the Thor scene hinting that Deadpool could sacrifice himself in the MCU movie.
Deadpool’s Death Would Mirror Iron Man’s In Avengers: Endgame
Robert Downey Jr. And Ryan Reynolds’ Superhero Roles Share Similarities
Deadpool & Wolverine could be setting up Avengers: Secret Wars to repeat an Avengers: Endgame trick. In the highest-grossing Avengers movie, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos and his army, dying after using the Nano Gauntlet to turn the villains into dust. RDJ’s Iron Man was the hero who had the greatest impact on the MCU, with 2008’s Iron Man being the first film in the franchise and its extraordinary success serving to help establish future MCU projects and guarantee the shared universe’s success.
Deadpool could similarly sacrifice himself to save the multiverse from Kang the Conqueror and other villains in Avengers: Secret Wars. Like Downey with Iron Man, Reynolds’ casting as Deadpool is held highly as one of the best in superhero adaptations, being perhaps the closest fit between character and actor since RDJ was cast as Iron Man. The Deadpool & Wolverine trailer also featured Wade Wilson calling himself “Marvel Jesus,” and thematically, that could be leading to his sacrifice in Avengers: Secret Wars, joining the MCU to really save it. Deadpool’s death would carry a similar weight to Iron Man’s.
Why Deadpool Dying In Avengers: Secret Wars Would Be Bad For The MCU
Wade Wilson Still Has More Story To Tell
Although Avengers: Secret Wars could see Deadpool sacrifice himself, with his death teased by Thor’s Deadpool & Wolverine cameo, that would not be ideal. Sure, Deadpool would make sense as a major sacrifice for the film, with his death being impactful. However, killing the fan-favorite character only a few years after he joins the MCU — and before he can live up to his true potential — would be a disastrous choice. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is a fan-favorite character, and his MCU debut in Deadpool & Wolverine could be the start of even better things for the hero.
While characters from Fox’s X-Men movies are rumored to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool should hang around in the MCU for the X-Men reboot, interacting with whoever gets cast as the new Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men. After the Deadpool movies mostly joked about the existence of the X-Men, having Wade Wilson thrive in a world with the mutants, the Avengers, and others would be more exciting than his death. While Deadpool & Wolverine could set up Wade Wilson’s sacrifice for Avengers: Secret Wars, that would not be his best MCU future.
