This Is Why Lara Jean Won’t Return to XO, Kitty – And It’s Devastating

Lara Jean from To All The Boys and Kitty from XO, Kitty Season 2 are in front of pink clouds

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for XO, Kitty season 2!

To All The Boys’ main character, Lara Jean Song-Covey, doesn’t appear in XO, Kitty season 2, raising questions about why others showed up instead of her. Almost two years after the first season released on Netflix, XO, Kitty season 2 is finally out, much to the delight of fans. Kitty Song-Covey returns to the Korean Independent School of Seoul alongside the other XO, Kitty characters, with the titular lead embarking on romances and learning more about her family.

With the season 2 trailer revealing a Peter Kavinksy cameo, To All The Boys fans might have expected Lara Jean Song-Covey to appear. After all, there isn’t an obvious reason why Peter would have come to Korea without his girlfriend. However, the middle sister doesn’t appear in the sophomore outing of the To All The Boys TV spinoff, but this fits within the established narrative.

Lara Jean Is Still In College During XO Kitty Season 2 (& Peter Visited For Lacrosse)

Lara Jean Is In Her Final Year At New York University In XO, Kitty

The XO, Kitty timeline doesn’t line up with the To All The Boys timeline, so it could be confusing where the characters from the original series are. The spinoff series starts four years after Kitty and Dae meet. They meet the summer before Lara Jean and Peter’s senior year of high school, which means Lara Jean and Peter are in their final year of college during XO, Kitty seasons 1 and 2.

Since she’s in her final year at New York University, Lara Jean wouldn’t have the time and money to fly out to Korea, even if she wanted to. She’s probably inundated with classes and maybe even an internship. Margot has much more of an opportunity to visit Kitty, and Peter visits Kitty towards the end of XO, Kitty season 2 because his Stanford lacrosse team is playing a game in Seoul.

Lana Condor Is Open To Making A Cameo As Lara Jean In XO Kitty’s Future

The Door Is Open For Lara Jean Song-Covey To Appear In XO, Kitty Season 3

While a Lara Jean cameo didn’t make sense for XO, Kitty season 2, the door isn’t closed for the future, according to the actor who plays her, Lana Condor. Since finishing the To All The Boys movies, Condor has stayed busy with her acting career, expanding into executive producer work as well. However, she said this when asked about a Lara Jean cameo in the spinoff series:

I would definitely never say no [to appearing in XO, Kitty.] I mean, I think it’s pretty clear that I love the “To All the Boys” world and have dedicated a lot of my young adulthood to it. To me, that world feels like home.

Condor’s passion for the world is a great sign. However, XO, Kitty bringing back Lara Jean Song-Covey in the future wouldn’t just come down to the actor’s willingness and schedule. The people in charge of the spinoff would need to be on board.

Luckily, showrunner Jessica O’Toole addressed a future Lara Jean cameo, and she seems open to the idea of the beloved character making an appearance. She said, “[Lara Jean returning] would be a wonderful opportunity, if we can make that happen.” If everything lines up and Netflix picks up XO, Kitty for season 3, Kitty and the viewers could see the middle Song-Covey sister again.
