“They realize they are meant to die on this mission”: Marvel’s Alleged Plan For Florence Pugh Led Thunderbolts* Sounds Way Too Similar to Suicide Squad

The film has been delayed numerous times and restarted filming earlier this year.

Yelena Belova Thunderbolts

Florence Pugh is all set to reprise her role as Yelena Belova in the upcoming Marvel film Thunderbolts*. The actress will be joined by other characters seen in previous installments of the MCU such as David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell. The film reportedly follows a group of antiheroes on a mission for the government.

Recently, popular scooper Daniel Richtman mentioned that the film would see the Thunderbolts grouped together to go on a mission that is designed to lead to their death. The scooper mentioned that the rest of the film would see them turn the tables and target their bosses. Fans were quick to note the similarities in plot with the DCEU film Suicide Squad.

Florence Pugh’s Thunderbolts* Rumored Plot Revealed By Insider

Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova in Black Widow

Florence Pugh began her journey in the MCU with the Scarlett Johansson starrer Black Widow, in which she played Yelena Belova. The action film received mixed reactions, however, Pugh received acclaim for her performance. She was set to return in the team-up superhero film Thunderbolts* which also stars Sebastian Stan, Davi Harbour, and others.

The film was initially set also to star Stephen Yeun and Ayo Idibri. However, the numerous production delays led to the two actors departing from their roles. While Yeon was rumored to play Sentry in the film, Idibri was set to play the assistant of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina de Fontaine. Geraldine Vishwanathan replaced The Bear star in the film.

Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and gang in Thunderbolts*

Recently, industry insider Daniel Richtman revealed in his latest newsletter the core plot of the film. The Jake Schreier directorial would see various antiheroes of the MCU grouped for a dangerous mission. Richtman mentioned, Yelena, US Agent, Ghost, and Taskmaster are sent by Val to kill someone in a vault. They realize they’ve been set up and were meant to die on this mission. So they team up against their boss to take her down.

Many have speculated that the ‘someone’ in the vault is Sentry, who is set to be played by Lewis Pullman in Thunderbolts*.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts*’ Plot Sounds Similar To Suicide Squad

Will Smith, Harley Quinn, and the gang set out on a mission

While on the surface the two groups of villains are the same by design, the recently leaked plot of Thunderbolts* by Daniel Richtman seems to be very similar to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. The DCEU film also saw a group of prominent villains and antiheroes such as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, and more sent on a mission to fail.

While Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller sent the Suicide Squad on the mission against Enchantress, the role in the Marvel film seems to be filled by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina de Fontaine. In Ayer’s film, the mission goes sideways pretty early and the group realizes Waller’s ulterior motive, leading them to complete the mission and re-negotiate with her.

Suicide Squad was met with negative reactions upon release due to the inconsistent tone and choppy editing. Though the film earned $749 million at the box office, it has often been considered to be one of the worst DC films. Fans were quick to point out the similarities between the film and the upcoming Thunderbolts*.

The comparison to a bad DC film is not helping Marvel’s case with Thunderbolts* as the film has already faced numerous delays and rewrites.

Suicide Squad is available to stream on Max.
