Fans have been promised “a lot more Summer to look forward to”.

It’s good news, Summer I Turned Pretty fans: there’s more love triangle drama between Belly and the Fisher boys on the horizon.

That’s right, folks. The Prime Video drama is returning for season 3.

Based on Jenny Han’s book trilogy of the same name, the show focuses on 16-year-old Isabel ‘Belly’ Conklin’s love triangle with her childhood friends, the Fisher brothers.

Speaking to Deadline about the upcoming instalment, author Han said: “I am looking forward to giving the fans the iconic moments of the third book that they’re expecting, but also looking forward to being able to hopefully surprise and delight them as well.”

Han went on to reveal how she decides what to lift from the source material and what to leave behind.

“Just because I’ve lived with these stories for so long, way before there was a show I was having book signings and my readers would reach out to me offline, so I really do feel I understand what is important to them,” she explained.

“And whenever I can, I try to give them that, because I obviously want them to feel happy with the show, because I know they’ve been waiting for a really long time. So I do my best to deliver those moments.”

Head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, Vernon Sanders, is also thrilled that the show is returning for one final chapter: “We’ve been delighted to see the passion with which fans have embraced The Summer I Turned Pretty. Jenny Han is a gifted storyteller whose fans have been clamouring for the third chapter of this story.

“We’re excited today to share the news that they have a lot more Summer to look forward to.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 release date speculation: When will it air?

Both seasons of the show have aired in the summer months, as you’d expect – season 1 arrived in June 2022, with the second instalment arriving in July this year, so initially we would have expected season 3 to arrive in summer 2024.

However, fans will have a while to wait a bit longer for the next instalment of The Summer I Turned Pretty, as episodes won’t be released until 2025.

“We’re officially rolling on #TheSummerITurnedPretty Season 3,” Amazon announced recently in an Instagram post, alongside a video of the cast on the beach.

“Eleven episodes coming your way. See you in Cousins in 2025,” it concluded.

We’d expect all of the following to return for season 3:

Following her death in between season 1 and season 2, we’d also expect Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) to appear in flashbacks.

The following could also feature, but their futures feel more uncertain:

Kyra Sedgwick as Julia
David Iacono as Cam

And there’s also an opportunity for some new characters to join.

At the end of season 2, Belly chose Jeremiah over Conrad after some extensive deliberation.

In an interview with TV Line, Tung explained her character’s decision, claiming it “made sense for her in the moment”.

“She’s been through a lot with both of them, and I think she’s realised that, at that time, Conrad has not shown her that he will ever be willing to fight for that relationship as much as she will.”

She added: “Here’s Jeremiah, ready to fight for her, continuing to fight for her, just proving, I think, constantly how much he loves her and cares about her, even in watching her be with Conrad for so long.”

Speaking about the scene, Han told Deadline: “I think with Conrad, she had that crush on him for so long that she felt like he called the shots of whether or not they were together because she wanted to be with him.

“I think it’s really important to to see her make that decision and then hopefully step into her next era of being able to move past, not Susannah’s death, but be able to move past the heavy grief portion of of her journey.”

However, if the synopsis of Han’s third book, We’ll Always Have Summer, is anything to go by, it looks like Belly hasn’t made her final choice after all.

“One girl. Two boys. The biggest decision of her life…” reads the official blurb.

“Just when Isabel thinks she had everything mapped out, life proves that when it comes to love, you can never have all the answers.

“Isabel has only ever loved two boys, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. She’s grown up with them, and can’t imagine life without them. One broke her heart, the other made her happier than she ever thought she’d be.
