The Best Star Trek Showrunner Gets Handed The Most Exciting Marvel Series

Terry Matalas is making the jump to Marvel for a new Vision series. The Star Trek: Picard showrunner and executive producer was able to win over Star Trek fans, and it seems like Marvel took notice. The currently untitled series is set for a 2026 release.

WandaVision Sequel Series

There aren’t any plot details about the Terry Matalas Vision series yet, but it’s set to take place after the events of WandaVision. In that series, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) magically took over an entire town out of grief after the death of Vision (Paul Bettany) at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Part of this was a version of Vision and two kids, creating the illusion of a happy family.

The Adventures Of White Vision

When Vision realized the facade, he ended up battling a rebuilt version of himself with no memories, White Vision. When Wanda eventually released the town, she also gave White Vision his memories back and allowed the Vision she created to fade away. Terry Matalas’ series will presumably follow White Vision as he re-enters the world after these events.

Matalas History With Sci-Fi

Terry Matalas recently worked on Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard as showrunner. The season was universally praised and earned Matalas a WGA nomination for the series finale, which was clearly enough to convince Kevin Feige to bring him on for this Vision project. Matalas previously co-created and was showrunner on the SyFy series 12 Monkeys, was showrunner on the fourth season of the CBS MacGyver series, and was showrunner on the second season of Picard as well.

Fans Wanted Matalas To Stay With Star Trek

While many Star Trek fans were hoping that Terry Matalas would take on another Trek series in the form of the much-wanted Picard spin-off Star Trek: Legacy, it seems like the Vision project will likely keep him busy for a while. We also don’t know yet if this will be a one-off series like WandaVision or a multi-season series like Loki. If it ends up being the latter, Matalas may be staying busy over at Marvel for quite a while.

The Other WandaVision Spin-Off

Terry Matalas’ Vision series is presumably unseating the previously in-the-works series that was in development with WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer. Schaeffer was instead brought on to run the Agatha spin-off of WandaVision, which sees Kathryn Hahn reprising her role as Agatha Harkness. That series, Agatha All Along, though the title could change again, is coming to Disney+ in September.

Terry Matalas’ Vision series is one of the few Marvel TV shows released in the coming years. Marvel made the call to pare down its TV release approach for quality in favor of quantity after releasing numerous features and shows in previous years. In 2021 alone, Marvel released five seasons of new TV shows.

An Odd Time Period For Marvel

Comparatively, Agatha All Along is the only TV series scheduled for 2024, while Ironheart and Daredevil: Born Again are the only TV releases scheduled for 2025. Meanwhile, Terry Matalas’ newly announced Vision series is the only series with an official 2026 release date, though the Marvel Zombies and Spider-Man: Freshman Year shows currently in the works have yet to announce an official release window. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated on the Vision series as this story develops.
