“That’s also Mordo from Doctor Strange”: Tom Hardy’s Venom 3 Trailer Might Just Have Resulted in a Big Plot Hole in MCU

The trailer for Venom: The Last Dance introduces Chiwetel Ejiofor in an undisclosed character raising continuity questions between the Sony and Marvel universes.

A few hours down the line, Sony dropped the much-anticipated trailer for Venom: The Last Dance. The third iteration of the franchise helmed by Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock previewed some of the most iconic scenes that it had in store and took fans over by storm. Additionally, it also highlighted a sense of tension and brought forward the fact that it could indeed be the last time that the symbiotic relationship rolls on the screens, at least for the British actor.

The trailer debut also marked Hardy as the only other actor in Sony’s Spider-Man universe to complete a trilogy of movies after Tobey Maguire. Regardless of such highs, the teaser also threw numbing plot inconsistencies. A complete disregard or lack of sense prevailed as the snippet seemingly did away with the multiverse crossover that took place in Tom Holland’s 2021 flick, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Venom: The Last Dance trailer just does not make sense

The three-minute cut-and-stitch first trailer for the third installment of Sony’s symbiote franchise rained down a fever grip for its celebrated moments. From a poignant character development for Mrs. Chen, who now trusted Venom enough to dance with him, to peak comic-book movie scenes such as a symbiote horse, the teaser had its moments. However, it presented a brutal plot hole and confusion with the inclusion of Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Known for his role as Mordo and his variant in the two Doctor Strange movies, the actor seemingly takes up a villainous role in the third Venom movie. Yet, the utmost senselessness pops up when the clips show his Sony character picking up the trace of Tom Hardy’s symbiote from the very same bar and likely in the company of the same bartender who featured in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The 2021 movie had Eddie Brock transported briefly to the main MCU timeline before pulling him back. Thus, the scene from the trailer poses whether Ejiofor’s character is a Mordo variant capable of traversing the multiverse or if it is just Sony’s way of completely forgetting the chain of events and focusing on setting up its own universe.

Another point of contention sparks fans’ debate

If the confusion over Mordo was not enough, the latest trailer also included Rhys Ifans as an undisclosed character put in isolation and under watch. The actor played Dr. Curtis Connors, aka the Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man as well as in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Despite the memorable scenes featured in the trailer, these plot inconsistencies stood out like a sore thumb and had fans questioning and guessing.

Several fans leaned into the theory that Sony simply chose to ignore the end of the last Tom Holland flick and the characters, at best, will be plot holes that Marvel Studios need to solve on their end. Moreover, the hopes for that piece of symbiote bonding to or at least appearing against MCU’s Spider-Man also appeared to fade away.

Plot details for Venom: The Last Dance still remains under wraps. However, the trailer has suggested that many other symbiotes from space will join in to take down Hardy’s pal in a battle-heavy affair, as suggested by a line in the trailer – “An army is coming”. Moreover, Eddie Brock, too, will be on the hunt by special forces, setting the stage for a mega-showdown.

Venom: The Last Dance is currently scheduled for an October release.
