Eminem had a big hand in promoting hip hop amongst youngsters, especially in Middle America. There was a time when no one was as iconic or influential in the world of hip hop, and he is often credited for paving the way for white rappers in the industry. Whether it is Rap God or Not Afraid or the personal favorite, Cleanin’ Out My Closet, Eminem has released one incredible song after another throughout his career.

After his last studio album titled Music to Be Murdered (2020), he is finally coming back with The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) which will be his twelfth studio album. In one of the songs of his upcoming album, Eminem has a little surprise for Marvel fans as he makes a witty reference to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man.

All throughout the years, there have been debates amongst Marvel fans about who is the better Spider-Man – Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, or Tom Holland. And now, it looks like Eminem might have given his opinion on the whole dispute.

After Houdini, the first single on Eminem’s upcoming album, the rapper released a teaser for his next song titled Tobey. In the teaser, he can be seen sporting a mask of Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees. He turns on a chainsaw and cuts through something (or someone) as blood splashes all over the room.

The music starts, and Eminem says, “Tobey Maguire got hit by a Spider, but me, see it was a goat.”

A clear reference to Maguire’s Spider-Man, Eminem proves that he has been a fan of superheroes for a long time now. This isn’t the first time he referenced a comic book character in one of his songs. Back in 2013, his popular single Rap God had the lyrics: “Kneel before General Zod this planet’s Krypton No Asgard, Asgard. So you be Thor, and I’ll be Odin, you rodent, I’m omnipotent.”

Eminem has always been a fan of superheroes. An annotation of Rap God on Genius.com shared the actor stating,

I’ve always been into comic books. Spiderman, Hulk, old Batmans, Supermans — mostly vintage Marvel s**t from before I was born. Just being able to have those pieces of history is crazy. I would not want to face off with somebody comparing comic book knowledge, but I know a pretty good amount.

The rapper has referenced Marvel plenty of times in his songs including Untouchable, My Name Is, Baby, and Low, Down, Dirty where he said, “My head’s ringing, like it was Spider Sense tingling.”

What adds cherry to this cake is the fact that Eminem is not only a fan of Marvel but is also a character in the comics. He has appeared alongside Iron Man and The Punisher.

Fans React to Eminem’s Spider-Man Reference

Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man in Spider-Man 2 | Sony Pictures Releasing

Marvel has a huge fan following that is spread all across the globe, and thus, when Eminem name-dropped Maguire’s Peter Parker in his song, the fans went crazy, and rightly so.

While some thought the lyric was horrible, others credited the rapper for knowing who the best Spider-Man is out of three.

Take a look at what the fans had to say about the teased lyric:

The single also features two other Detroit rappers, Big Sean and BabyTron, who were seen standing behind Eminem in the teaser. While the single will drop on July 02, a music video produced by Cole Bennett will follow on July 05.

The first song on the album, Houdini, was a commercial success and reached the number-one spot in twelve countries. It’ll be interesting to see how Tobey does now that the whole Marvel fandom is involved.
