“That will change”: Dark Knight Director Christopher Nolan Revealed a Dark Reality about Superhero Franchises That’s Already a Ticking Time Bomb for Marvel

Christopher Nolan’s statements 7 years ago ring like a warning bell for Marvel Studios in the present!

It comes as no surprise that Christopher Nolan, who directed films like Inception and Interstellar, was ahead of his time. From changing times to superhero movies, Nolan is regarded as one of the most esteemed directors in Hollywood, and rightfully so. His statements ring true even after 7 years!

Right after creating and directing the 2017 film Dunkirk, Nolan sat for an interview to talk about his then-released film. During his talks, the director mentioned that times were changing. Well, his statements are indeed true since modern films are very different compared to the early 2000s or even 2010s!

Christopher Nolan Was Ahead of His Time!

Being a director known for creating some iconic movies like The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and, The Prestige, Christopher Nolan has been praised beyond measure. From scientific approaches to breakthroughs in physics, the director has taught a lot to humanity through his films.

Cillian Murphy

Back in 2017, the director released a film titled Dunkirk. Based on the historical story during World War II when soldiers evacuated the town of Dunkirk, the film starred Harry Styles, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, and several others.

Upon the film’s release, Dunkirk received rave reviews with an iconic portrayal of war, patriotism, and the sense of time on the battlefield! During that time, Christopher Nolan sat for an interview with Time Magazine and that is what they discussed, time.

It’s a very different world than when I made Batman Begins, where I felt I was really able to express something about what I felt. Right now individual voices in mainstream filmmaking are a little bit buried by the concept of the existing franchise, which has become a very robust economic model for the studios.

He further continued, But I think that will change. I think that the studios have always valued freshness and new voices. Hollywood has always valued the unexpected—even if Wall Street doesn’t.

Well, Nolan revealed these statements 7 years ago and since then, times have indeed changed. Despite veteran directors like Peyton Reed or Nia DaCosta working on movies like Ant-Man 3 and The Marvels, the films have failed.

It has been alleged that since these individual voices have been suppressed, the movies follow a general narrative and hence, there’s nothing left to explore in the “traditional” realm of films. However, directors like Denis Villeneuve and Ari Aster are breaking these chains with their unique and creative films.

Why Was Dunkirk Such A Short Film?

With a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes, Dunkirk is the shortest film that Christopher Nolan has ever created except his debut film Following. With intense battle scenes and a piece of visceral and often jarring music by Hans Zimmer, Nolan revealed that this film was an experiment.

As the interview further continued, the Tenet director revealed that Dunkirk was an experiment in which he put audiences straight into the battlefield. With no time for buildups or backstories, Nolan wanted the audience to headfirst into the World War II experience.

I wanted to tell the story primarily in visual terms and not through the usual theatrical devices of people discussing backstory. I wanted to throw the audience straight into this very intense, snowballing series of events that in my films you normally only find in the third act.

The director further stated that this was the reason why the film was a bit short since people wouldn’t be able to suffer too much in this chaos. I felt the intensity of the experience would be such that there would be a saturation point where people couldn’t sit through anymore. For that reason it felt important that it be as short as possible.

Although the director received some complaints about his scenes from Batman Begins, we can all agree that Nolan is one in eight billion.

On the other hand, having an intriguing storyline and a stellar cast, Dunkirk received a rating of 7.8/10 on IMDB and a whopping 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Dunkirk is available to rent on Apple TV+ in the U.S.
