“That was the weirdest one”: Ryan Reynolds’ One Idea For Deadpool 3 Was So Ridiculous That It Could’ve Been a Worse Flop Than Dakota Johnson’s ‘Madame Web’
We are glad Hugh Jackman reprising his role saved us from this ridiculous storyline that would have been a stain on Deadpool’s legacy.

The release of Deadpool & Wolverine is just around the corner and we could not be more excited. From what we have seen and heard so far, we have absolutely no doubt that the film is going to break records left and right, and revive the theatres this month. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool 3 is on track to become Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next best thing.

We are convinced that Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy worked together to find the perfect story for Deadpool’s entry into the MCU. However, there was a time when they were struggling to come up with a story and that’s when Ryan Reynolds suggested an absurd plotline involving Karan Soni’s Dopinder that would have ruined the film and placed it below Madame Web.
Ryan Reynolds and His Ridiculous Idea for Deadpool 3

Before Hugh Jackman came on board, the writers’ team was working day and night to figure out the film’s story. For the longest time, nothing seemed to be working and Ryan Reynolds couldn’t stop coming up with weird ideas.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that one of his ideas was to make Deadpool 3 into a Rashomon story. A Rashomon story is one where the same incident is described by multiple people – different POVs basically.
He stated that one idea was “a Rashomon story that had these three different points of view.” While we know one of the three POVs would have belonged to Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, we wonder who the other two could have been.
Believe it or not, this wasn’t the weirdest idea Reynolds had. The one that takes the cake is when the actor thought about turning Deadpool 3 into an indie road film with just him and Karan Soni’s Dopinder.
It would have been the complete opposite of your average MCU film. How? Well for starters, it would have a budget of under ten million dollars and no special effects.
In Reynolds’ own words, Literally, it was a $5 or $6 million budget with no special effects. It was just a talkie-talkie road trip with me and Dopinder and some of the things we collected and saw along the way. It wasn’t meant to be an event movie. If we’re on our way to Point C, it was meant to just get us to Point B. That was the weirdest one. I liked it. I thought it was kind of fun.
Luckily, Jackman decided that he wanted to reprise his role as Wolverine in the film and we were saved from whatever Reynolds was trying to make! If the Free Guy actor had somehow gotten the green light for this plot, we are almost certain that the film would have tanked, probably worse than Madame Web.

Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web was made on a budget of $80-100 million and it needed somewhere between $150-200 million just to break even. Unfortunately, the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe could only bring in $100 million.
If Shawn Levy agreed with Reynolds and pushed for a buddy road trip for Deadpool 3 who knows what would have happened to the film after its release?
Ryan Reynolds Had an Equally Weird Idea for Deadpool 2

As much as we know Reynolds, we are not surprised that this wasn’t the first time he tried to pitch a weird story for his Deadpool films. During his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor revealed that he had a hilarious idea for Deadpool 2.
Instead of the time traveling he does in the sequel after forming a team of mutants, Reynolds wanted Deadpool to steal the iconic red chair from the reality show, The Voice. That’s it. That’s the entire plot.
Reynolds stated, My first pitch to the studio was not met very well. I pitched them that Deadpool – this is for the sequel – that Deadpool would – the whole story of the movie would be Deadpool trying to steal the big red chair from ‘The Voice.’ And they were like ‘No. That’s just the dumbest things ever, so no.’
Well, perhaps one of these days Reynolds could fulfill his wish of putting Deadpool in weird storylines just for the fun of it. Honestly, we’d love to see the Merc snooping around the set of The Voice and trying to walk out with a huge chair.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in theatres on July 26, 2024.
