While Madame Web may not have performed well at the box office, Sydney Sweeney is still game to appear in the MCU in the future, but with a catch.

Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall's Spider-Woman hanging upside down in 2024's Madame Web

Following her debut as Spider-Woman in Madame Web, Sydney Sweeney opens up on whether or not she would want to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After being in development for several years, the Madame Web movie arrived in theaters this year, serving as the first comic book film released in 2024. However, the movie saw negative critical reception and some lackluster box office results, making Madame Web ultimately a disappointment for Sony Pictures.

In an interview with Comic Book, Sweeney was asked what she thought about the idea of returning as Julia Cornwall, a.k.a. Spider-Woman, in a Marvel project with her fellow Euphoria co-star Zendaya, who plays Michelle Jones-Watson in the MCU, since Madame Web 2 is seemingly not happening. While there may not be any plans set in stone for now, Sweeney was more than open to the idea, sharing the following:

Oh my God yeah, that’d be so cool.

How Sydney Sweeney Could Play Spider-Woman In The MCU

The Multiverse Saga Makes Spider-Woman’s Future More Possible Than It May Appear

Based on the Madame Web movie ending, there were seemingly intentions to continue the stories of the film’s characters in potential follow-up appearances. While that may not happen in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe now after the movie’s reception, Sweeney could easily join the MCU, and actually play Spider-Woman once again. However, rather than be a continuation of Madame Web, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures could lean into The Multiverse Saga and have her play her own variant.

If something like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 movie happens in the coming years, Sweeney could play the Earth-199999 version of Julia and also go with a completely fresh backstory without any ties to Madame Web. This approach would also allow the MCU to expand Spider-Man mythology by having other heroes join Peter, opening up huge swathes of Marvel lore to draw from. This would especially be a refreshing angle as Peter is going to be on his own, given that he lives in a world where nobody knows him anymore, making prospective allies more valuable.

Given Sweeney’s star power following successful hits like Anyone But You and Euphoria, it would be fun to see how she would do in the MCU. While Madame Web may not have been the best first entry into the world of superheroes, Sweeney’s Spider-Woman definitely had potential and may do better in a franchise like the MCU. For now, time will tell if Sweeney will ever get to play any version of her Madame Web character down the line.
