Spider-Man Star Comments On Filming Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield’s Special First MCU Scene 3 Years After Movie Release

A Marvel Cinematic Universe star breaks down the emotional aspect of filming Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s first scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Spider-Man might be the most popular superhero in the world, and the character’s movies have been a hit with each new generation. That is why Spider-Man: No Way Home was such a groundbreaking event, as it pulled from all live-action Spider-Man movies to finally have Garfield, Maguire, and Tom Holland’s versions of Spider-Man meet through the multiverse, and the return of the two older Spider-Man stars was iconic.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Ned Leeds actor Jacob Batalon revealed what it was like to be there for Garfield and Maguire’s first scene back as their versions of Spider-Man in the MCU. According to the MCU Spider-Man trilogy actor who plays the best friend to Holland’s Peter Parker, “Everyone on set knew it was really special.” Batalon also mentioned that he thought at the time that the scene — when Ned opens up portals that bring Garfield and Maguire’s Spider-Men together — would be talked about for a long time. Check out the full quote below:

“I think everyone on set knew it was really special. It had never been done before. I feel like everyone understood the gravity of the moment, but we also kept it really light. At that point in filming, because we were working during the pandemic, we were just all grateful to be there.

Working on that scene specifically was such a delight because Andrew and Tobey are super great. I remember thinking that it was probably one of those moments where people will probably be talking about it for a long time. It was really fun. I feel like that was probably the time where I kind of got to know them the most.”

Will Tobey Maguire And Andrew Garfield Return As Spider-Man?

The Multiverse Allows It

Spider-Man: No Way Home was a major success, with the movie almost reaching the $2 billion worldwide mark, which it would have easily surpassed had the MCU film been released in China. With an enormous box office, acclaim from critics, and fan reception through the roof, Spider-Man: No Way Home makes it clear that there is a desire for Garfield and Maguire to come back as their versions of Spider-Man for more. As it stands, that could happen in a few different ways, both in the MCU and not.

The MCU’s Multiverse Saga still has a few years left, so Garfield and Maguire’s Spider-Men could still appear in the MCU alongside Holland’s Peter Parker. There are rumors that Sony wants Holland’s Spider-Man 4 to be another big multiverse event with Garfield and Maguire, perhaps this time with both past Spider-Man movie actors as leads from the start. However, Marvel Studios is said to want a street-level story for Spider-Man 4. The MCU could also use the older Spider-Men in Avengers: Secret Wars, which will end the Multiverse Saga and should include several multiverse characters.

If Garfield and Maguire were not to return to an MCU project, there are other ways the two could play Spider-Man again. The duo could make a cameo or play supporting roles in the animated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, as the animated movie franchise already introduced live-action characters in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. One of the two actors could also be chosen to serve as the Peter Parker of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which currently has no Spider-Man. New Spider-Man solo movies for Garfield and Maguire are another option after their Spider-Man: No Way Home return.
