Sony Wants Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to Return But Not in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4, Industry Insider Has an Upsetting Update

Sony plans to bring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield into the SSU, upsetting fans especially after Madame Web’s fate.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s entry into the MCU was one of those iconic moments in superhero cinema, that Sony badly wants to recreate. If it were up to them, the Tom Rothman-led studio would have reunited the three heroes once again in the hopes of making another $2 billion phenomenon. Marvel’s constant objection to this plan may have forced Sony to consider another option for Maguire and Garfield.

According to reports, Sony is set to bring back the previous Spider-Man actors into the SSU. It could mean that both Maguire and Garfield may get their own movies and appear in SSU’s multiversal adventures.

Industry Insider Says Sony Wants Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in the SSU Multiverse

According to industry insider Daniel Richman’s earlier reports, Tom Rothman, the Head of Sony, wanted another multiversal adventure with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning to the movie.

However, Kevin Feige, the Head of Marvel, had an entirely different plan for the upcoming film, something that many fans could relate to. After exploring the theme of multiverse in many MCU movies, Feige found Holland’s next film to be perfect for a street-level storyline. He shared with MTV News that Holland’s Peter Parker and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock will headline this side of the MCU.

The two studios have also been trying to bring in directors who would align with their vision for the film. Jon Watts, who directed the earlier three Spider-Man films in the MCU, recently stepped down from the role.

The latest news appears to suggest that Sony is looking to take matters into their own hands rather than wait for Marvel to concede to their demands. Reports suggest that they are looking in another direction if Marvel continues with their street-level plan for Spider-Man 4.

According to Daniel Richtman’s latest scoop, Sony will bring back Maguire and Garfield in their own cinematic universe. These actors will lead the SSU’s multiverse storyline, which would be different from the MCU’s. It means that Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Men will appear together with Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter.

Fans Are Upset About The Latest Update On Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Future

Fans are sure that the SSU multiverse is one team-up they don’t want to see ever. Sony has been releasing disastrous live-action movies back-to-back despite its massive success with the animated Spider-Verse. The studio faced massive backlash for its recent film Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson.

One fan on X shared that neither Maguire nor Garfield would agree to return if not to the MCU. Another fan wanted Sony to let go of these characters and let Marvel handle them. One suggestion was to put them together in Avengers: Secret Wars or Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but not in the SSU.

Another fan suggestion was for Sony to make Spider-Man 4 with Maguire and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Garfield, rather than a multiversal movie. Other fans didn’t want Sony to touch any Spider-Man-related content after their recent flops. Some of the fan reactions read:

Marvel’s Spider-Man 4 may have a chance to explore the street-level story that Feige wanted to tell fully. Holland’s Peter Parker has a lot on his plate now — the loss of Aunt May, everyone forgetting who he is, college, and other life problems — alongside crimefighting. He may even get to go face-to-face with Kingpin in the film.

For fans of the trio, Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available for streaming on FX Now.
