Marvel Studios has been setting up a powerful new team of Avengers in the MCU, but recent comments could hint at this team facing major problems.
Marvel Studios may have been actively setting up the Young Avengers in the MCU, but recent comments suggest the team’s debut may not be so easy. In the wake of Avengers: Endgame and the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios began to introduce a whole host of new superheroes to the MCU, and this included a number of younger characters. Appearances by the likes of Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, Kid Loki, and Billy and Tommy Maximoff spurred theories that the MCU’s Young Avengers team would be forming, and this was seemingly confirmed in 2023’s The Marvels.
After her experience with Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau’s Photon in The Marvels, Kamala Khan used the SABER tablet to learn about other heroes existing in the MCU, and approached Kate Bishop with the proposition of building a new superteam. This all but confirmed the upcoming formation of the Young Avengers, especially with Cassie Lang being name-dropped, too, but there has been some concern about how and when the Young Avengers might actually come together. This may have only been exacerbated by recent comments from Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani, perhaps spelling bad news for the Young Avengers.
Iman Vellani Is Returning To The MCU As Kamala Khan, But She Doesn’t Know When
Iman Vellani has now made two appearances in the MCU, first in 2022’s Ms. Marvel, and again in 2023’s The Marvels, making the move to the big screen. Iman Vellani has been teased to carry the MCU forward for several years, as Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel has been set up for a pivotal role as the leader of the Young Avengers. However, Vellani’s MCU future is currently unclear, and even Vellani herself seems unsure of when she will return, though she has apparently been “assured” by Marvel Studios that Kamala Khan does have a future in the MCU (via Polygon).
Vellani’s Comments Mean There May Not Be Solid Young Avengers Plans
The fact that Iman Vellani herself doesn’t know when Kamala Khan will be returning to the MCU suggests that Marvel Studios perhaps doesn’t yet have any solid plans to bring together the Young Avengers. Of course, if Marvel Studios did have plans, it’s possible they wouldn’t have been divulged to Vellani just yet, but since she’s expected to be a core member of the team, potentially even the team’s leader, it would make sense for her to have some idea of her future role. Since Vellani seems clueless about her MCU future, however, the Young Avengers may be in trouble.
Now that Marvel Studios has overtly teased the Young Avengers’ formation in The Marvels, viewers will surely be waiting for the next tease towards the team coming together. However, with no announced Young Avengers-centric project in the MCU’s Phase 5 and 6 slate, and with recent news that Disney will be slowing down Marvel’s output, it’s unclear exactly when any more “breadcrumbs” will be dropped regarding the team. Unfortunately, this poses a greater issue for Marvel Studios, and the longer the Young Avengers take to form, the more prevalent this problem becomes, and the more difficult it becomes to solve.
Young Avengers Uncertainty Would Continue A Frustrating MCU Problem
While some heroes such as Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, Shuri’s Black Panther and the new Guardians of the Galaxy team may not be revisited for a while, when they are, they can pick up where they left off. For the Young Avengers, however, this problem is trickier, as these young actors and their characters will grow up and potentially be too old for the team. After recent teases, it’s likely that the Young Avengers will form before the end of the Multiverse Saga, but even that is three years away, so Marvel Studios needs to put a plan in place soon.
