Scarlet Witch’s MCU Fate Finally Confirmed In Universe

Scarlet Witch’s MCU fate has been confirmed in the first trailer for Agatha All Along. Since the ending of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many have been wondering what happened to Wanda Maximoff. The film signaled that she perished in the Darkhold temple’s collapse, but audiences hoped she would return. However, the Agatha All Along trailer for the latest Disney+ show kills that hope.

The first trailer for the upcoming WandaVision spinoff confirmed that Wanda died in Doctor Strange 2. This is the first MCU project to officially state what happened to Scarlet Witch after her final battle with the Sorcerer Supreme. The reveal comes when Wanda’s name appears on a notepad in red ink, next to the date Oct. 13. Aubrey Plaza’s character then says, “That witch is gone, leaving you trapped in her distorted spell.” With the Scarlet Witch gone, Agatha can find a way out of this spell and restore her magic.

How Agatha All Along Can Bring Back Scarlet Witch

While the trailer confirms Wanda’s death, it also delivers some hope for comic book readers that the Scarlet Witch could return. In the trailer, Kathryn Hahn’s character plans to walk the Witches’ Road, an alternate plane of existence only available to magic wielders. The road was first introduced in James Robinson’s 2016 Scarlet Witch comic run. It is a road filled with countless magical dangers and is not meant to be walked down alone, which would explain why Agatha is putting a coven together.

It is possible that Scarlet Witch left the plane of the living and transitioned to the Witches’ Road after her death. In the comics, it is difficult to track sorcerers and witches once they enter the road, so other magic users on Earth might be unable to detect if Wanda is still alive. If she is on the Wtiches’ Road, Agatha could somehow discover and resurrect her.

If Agatha is unwilling to do so after being trapped under her spell, one of her followers could also bring Wanda back. It’s hard to believe that Marvel would end Wanda’s story in such an unsatisfying manner, but it also depends on whether Elizabeth Olsen wants to return. Still, Agatha All Along does leave the door open for the Scarlet Witch to return in some magical form.

Why There’s Doubt Over Scarlet Witch’s MCU Death

Scarlet Witch’s death has some skepticism behind it for a few reasons. One reason is that her body wasn’t shown after the temple collapsed on her in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness. There’s a common rule in film and television that if a character’s body isn’t seen, they likely aren’t dead. The only thing audiences saw was a burst of red magic, which means her fate is left ambiguous. Wanda is incredibly powerful, and it’s hard to believe that a crumbling building is what ultimately defeats her.

Another reason viewers are doubtful regarding her death is that it’s unsatisfying on a narrative level. Wanda has a traumatic storyline throughout the MCU, and it finally felt like she would move forward after the events of Wandavision. Seeing her go full villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness was abrupt, and Scarlet Witch barely had a chance for redemption before sacrificing herself. It’s a surprising way to end her character arc, and one that didn’t allow her to be the powerful hero audiences wanted to see.

Where Scarlet Witch Can Return After Agatha All Along

Scarlet Witch could return relatively soon, but it might not be the same Wanda that MCU viewers know. Many fallen heroes could return in Avengers 5 or Secret Wars when the multiverse gates open up. Several variants of Wanda could arrive, allowing Elizabeth Olsen to return as different versions of the character. It might not be the same Wanda, but it would still be worth it to have Olsen back in the MCU.

If the MCU’s Wanda is still alive, she could potentially return in Doctor Strange 3‘s story. The mystical arts are mysterious, and there are several ways the Sorcerer Supreme could theoretically resurrect her – which may be needed if Wanda’s chaos magic could help prevent an incursion from destroying their universe. Charlize Theron’s Clea and Strange are seemingly traveling through the multiverse, so they could also stumble upon another Wanda during their journey. The MCU has many roads it could take to bring back Wanda after Agatha All Along, and hopefully, they give her a chance to continue her story.
