Reynolds had certain limitations in the script of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’: one of them was the prohibition of mentioning this classic Disney character.
Although Ryan Reynolds admits he had some freedom when writing the script for ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, he also confessed that he accepted some limitations. One of them was a vulgar joke involving Mickey Mouse, which he eliminated at Disney’s request, but there is also another classic character of the company that he wanted to include that was more than a request, it was an outright prohibition.
The character that Disney banned from being used in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’.
Based on Reynolds’ words, present and past, Disney didn’t seem to put up much of an obstacle to making all kinds of jokes with Marvel characters, but not so with the classics, as is the case with Mickey Mouse… and Bambi.
In a joint interview with Andrew Garfield, Reynolds acknowledges that Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, gave him all the support during the scripting process, but also threw back some ideas. One of them was to reimagine ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ as the Japanese classic ‘Rashomon,’ and instead, Reynolds started introducing “the dumbest references,” including one to the cute fawn.
“Then I pitched one where I’m like, ‘It’s a two-hander with me and the hunter who shot Bambi’s mom.’ Which was, y’know… Their answer was, ‘We don’t touch Bambi, Ryan.’ OK, we don’t touch Bambi,” the actor tells Variety’s Actors on Actors. While far from the official reason, Bambi is one of the classics Disney is working on adapting for live-action, so Feige probably had that in mind when he denied Reynolds the joke.
‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ is currently available in the Disney+ catalog.
