Ryan Reynolds Explains Where Deadpool Can Fit in MCU’s Avengers and X-Men Plans

Ryan Reynolds is a force to be reckoned with, and after the success of Deadpool & Wolverine , there is no stopping the Canadian with the Midas touch. For that reason, many fans were surprised when Reynolds recently revealed that he doesn’t really see Deadpool 4 happening anytime soon, but in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he elaborated on what could be coming down the line if Deadpool gets the chance to team up with some big superhero groups.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, Wade Wilson was seen attempting to talk his way into a place on the Avengers’ team, but ultimately failing. However, the film ends on a note that both titular characters have “work” still to do in the franchise, which has been hinted at with rumors Jackman is wanted by Kevin Feige to continue playing Wolverine for at least several more years, and Reynolds obviously also has a part to play in the MCU’s future. Now Reynolds has shared his thoughts on Deadpool’s possible addition to the MCU’s Avengers team, or the upcoming X-Men introduction. He said:

“I think Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”

Where Will Deadpool Appear Next in the MCU?

There is no way of telling exactly where the Merc with the Mouth will show up next, but Reynolds recently cast doubt over Deadpool 4 featuring in his future. Appearing with Andrew Garfield on Variety’s Actors on Actors series, he noted:

“I have some pitches and ideas, but none of them center on Deadpool. He is a great supporting or ensemble player. And I would always want Deadpool and Wolverine to be paired in some way.”

Several years ago, the future of Deadpool was uncertain following the acquisition of Fox by Disney. Then came the announcement that Deadpool and Wolverine would be teaming up for the mother of all multiverse movies. The success of this year’s sole Marvel Studios release suggested that Deadpool 4 was guaranteed to happen, but Reynolds seems to have put paid to that idea.

The removed joke certainly lives up to expectations.

Naturally, even if there is not another solo outing for Deadpool, it is clear that his time in the MCU is a long way from being over. Similar to the way Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner has been a supporting character in several movies without having his own film, Deadpool has a long history of collaborations in Marvel Comics, and with two big multiverse-driven Avengers films coming in the next couple of years, as well as the imminent integration of the X-Men, there is no end to the nooks and crannies that Reynolds’ wise-cracking anti-hero could squeeze himself into.
