Members of the Royal Family have a cutting six-word response to anyone who mentions Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

According to former Tory MP and podcaster Gyles Brandreth, the names of Harry and Meghan “do not crop up very often” anymore in royal circles. But he says when they do, courtiers very often attempt to move the conversation away from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

It comes after Harry and Meghan quit life as working royals and moved to Montecito in California, USA, in 2020. Since then the pair have had a turbulent relationship with Harry’s family, making a series of claims about them in interviews with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix series, and in the duke’s memoir Spare.

In the book Voyage Around the Queen, author Craig Brown recalls Lord Snowdon once saying “the Royal Family is quite good at blanking out anything unpleasant or uncomfortable. This, Brown says, is something they have “had to employ with increasing frequency” since Harry and Meghan’s move.

While Brandreth, in 2022, said: “These days, the names of Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, do not crop up very often in court circles.

“When they do, courtiers flinch almost imperceptibly and change the subject – or, if that’s not possible, refer to them obliquely as ‘persons who live overseas’.

“Mention the Sussexes to other members of the royal family … and they simply smile briefly and say, “We wish them all the best” – and nothing else.”

Since the Sussexes quit the UK for the United States, they have rarely returned to England. The pair attended Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022, with Harry making subsequent trips alone – including a visit to King Charles after his cancer diagnosis.

In Spare the Duke unveiled the extent of his rift with his family, claiming he “barely exchanged a word” with his brother at the funeral, with experts saying it’s understood the pair haven’t spoken since.

Speaking on The Royals with Roya and Kate, Royal expert Roya Nikkhah said: “The family dynamics and relationships here with his father, his brother William, have been shattered, I think it’s fair to say.”

While Harry claims the rift between the pair even resulted in his brother physically attacking him.

He claimed William “grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and … knocked me to the floor” breaking a dog bowl during a physical altercation.
