In order to launch those characters, Marvel first needed a big win. Therefore, they came up with Iron Man, as it was the only character so far that never had a live-action film. Although Marvel came up with the plan to shoot Iron Man, they were hesitant to star Robert Downey Jr. Eventually, with Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige backing the decision to cast Downey Jr., MCU took the big risk and the rest is history.

Struggling to resuscitate his career, Robert Downey Jr. even agreed to take on the role of Tony Stark for as low as $500K salary and a percentage of the box office as per CBR. Betting on himself, the actor eventually turned the 2008 Iron Man movie into a grand success for Marvel. With the film making $585M globally, the actor made $2M with the backend. And that’s how the star began rebuilding his career from scratch.

Turning his career resurrecting deal with Marvel as the most lucrative one, in his career, the actor slowly started paving his way to success. For Avengers 2, Downey Jr. notched $60M, in Captain America: Civil War the actor bagged $64M ($50M base + $14M backend).

Gradually with growing fame and popularity, Robert Downey Jr. began making pricy deals like $1M per minute of screen time ($10M total) for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Ending his Marvel career with Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019), Downey Jr. bagged $75M and $130M, respectively, via THR. In the end, the actor not only resuscitated his lost career but went from a $500K starting salary to bagging $453M for his role as Tony Stark aka Iron Man.
