Meghan Markle is unlikely to return to the UK permanently as she’s “too much of an American girl,” according to a former royal staffer.

The Duchess of Sussex joined the royal family when she married Prince Harry in 2018, but her time in the UK was brief. She returned to the U.S. two years later, when she and Harry stepped down from their senior royal duties.

The pair now live in Montecito, California, with their two children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. With tensions between the royals and the Sussexes rising, many fans have speculated whether Harry and Meghan will ever return to the U.K., either for holidays or permanently.

Grant Harrold, a former royal butler, believes the Duchess of Sussex might return for Christmas holidays in the future but doesn’t see her living in the U.K. permanently. He said, “I just think Meghan’s too much of an American girl, she doesn’t want to be in the U.K. permanently.”

“I can see her coming over for the holidays and having time over here, but living here permanently? I just don’t see it,” Harrold added.

The expert, who served as King Charles’ butler from 2004 to 2011, added that unlike his wife, Prince Harry is more likely to return to his home country and live there permanently. He suggested, “Harry, I do see it. I think he could be open to returning, although I do think it’s highly unlikely.”

Harrold continued, “As I always keep saying, never say never.” His comments come after royal author Omid Scobie claimed Meghan “never wants to set foot” in the U.K. ever again.

According to his explosive book, Endgame, Meghan “never wants to step foot in England again” as she “never really felt at home” there. The author, who has often been referred to as “Meghan’s mouthpiece,” stated that the Duchess of Sussex “never wants to be involved in the British monarchy again.”

Harry has made several trips back to the U.K. since moving to America, including a visit in February to see his father following the monarch’s cancer diagnosis. The Duke of Sussex has previously opened up about his family and revealed plans for more trips to the U.K.

“So my family and my life in California is as it is. I have got other trips planned. That would take me through the U.K. or back to the U.K., so you know, I’ll stop in and see my family as much as I can,” he said during an appearance on Good Morning America.

However, it’s unlikely Meghan would join her husband. The last time she and Harry were both in the U.K. was in 2022 for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
