Agatha All Along is set to make its titular character an MCU anti-hero, according to Marvel Studios Head of Streaming, Television and Animation, Brand Winderbaum. Following Agatha Harkness’ introduction into the MCU timeline in WandaVision, the character naturally became a focal point of the franchise with her iconic villain twist reveal, though she hasn’t been seen since. However, this is set to change with the impending release of the Agatha All Along show on Disney+, which appears set to resolve a lot of questions that were left unanswered by the end of WandaVision itself.
One such question is whether Agatha will serve as a hero or a villain going forward, though this now appears to have already been answered. In The Official Marvel Podcast’s interview with Winderbaum, the Marvel Studios head spoke about Agatha All Along, stating the show is “really fun, but it’s really scary,” and going on to describe Agatha as “an amazing antihero.” As such, it appears the MCU is set to channel Kathryn Hahn’s charisma into a more morally complex antihero role in the upcoming MCU release.
WandaVision Proved Agatha Harkness Is A Perfect MCU Anti-Hero
While WandaVision depicted Agatha Harkness – initially introduced under the alias of Agnes while operating in the Scarlet Witch-controlled Westview – as a villain who intended only to use Wanda’s powers for her own devices, this still laid the groundwork for an anti-hero future. Naturally, one of the most pressing aspects of this was the popularity of Hahn’s depiction of Agatha, which quickly drew audience adoration and attention. With figures like Loki having also received MCU redemption arcs in part because of their success and status within the fanbase, it stands to reason that this reaction could garner the same result.
Similarly, it’s clear that Agatha was corrupted by the Darkhold much in the way that Wanda was after she obtained it, and its destruction could thus logically result in some major changes for the character. With even this corrupted version of Agatha expressing some concern for the fabric of reality due to Wanda’s lack of control of her powers – and arguably being at least partially justified in wanting to take Scarlet Witch’s powers having seen her forcibly mind control an entire town – characterizing the character in a morally complicated light seems par for the course.
With all of this in mind, it shouldn’t be too hard for Agatha All Along to showcase its protagonist as an antihero. This is doubly true since the show will get to spend far more time fleshing out the MCU’s iteration of the character, hopefully setting her up to be an entertaining cornerstone of the franchise’s new era.
