Princess Anne’s cutting remark hinted at true Prince Harry and Meghan Markle feelings

Princess Anne was once asked about the concept of a ‘slimmed down’ monarchy and her response was seen as a discreet dig at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Princess Anne subtly hinted at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal duties when discussing the idea of a “slimmed down” monarchy. The Princess Royal, aged 74, has remained tight-lipped about the Sussexes since they stepped back from the Royal Family in 2020, despite being one of the few royals seen engaging with Harry during events like the King’s Coronation.

In an interview with CBC earlier this year, Anne reflected on her brother’s choice to reduce the number of senior working royals, which was decided before certain members resigned from their roles. She commented: “Well, I think the ‘slimmed-down’ (monarchy) was said in a day when there were a few more people around to make that seem like a justifiable comment.

“I mean, it doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing, I have to say. I’m not quite sure what else, you know, we can do.”

Despite their rare public appearances together, it’s been suggested that Princess Anne foresaw Meghan’s brief tenure within the monarchy, as Meghan did not heed the seasoned royal’s advice.

As reported by the Daily Express, royal commentator Neil Sean shared: “According to a very good source Meghan Markle failed to warm to Princess Anne. And Princess Anne always knew that Meghan would have a very short shelf-life in the world of the British monarchy.

Princess Anne may have made a subtle dig at the couple earlier this year

“Apparently, when Meghan Markle joined the Royal Family, she sought out Princess Anne. According to a very good source, Princess Anne gave very sage advice to the new royal.

“Princess Anne reiterated this mantra, she pointed out that it wasn’t a working monarchy, it was a job, you turn up on time, you do your research, and do the duty.

“It’s all about the project at hand. She also pointed out that whatever charities you are involved in you, you needed to get involved and get immersed.”

The Princess Royal has earned the reputation of being one of the most industrious members of the Royal family, despite also being among the eldest. Even after sustaining an injury earlier this year, Anne took only a short break from her duties before resuming her full schedule of Royal engagements.
