Colombia’s vice president shared the connection between Harry and Meghan current visit to his late mom, the Princess of Wales.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s trip to Colombia has a small, yet sweet connection to his late mother Princess Diana.
The couple arrived in Bogota, the country’s capital, on Thursday, Aug. 15, looking like a power couple after receiving a cordial invitation from Colombia’s Vice President Francia Marquez and her husband Rafael Yerney Pinillo. The politicians have created a makeshift royal tour with a packed schedule for the pair and during a press conference ahead of their arrival, the vice president revealed an unknown link between the country and Princess Diana.
While talking to the press, Francia was asked about the late royal’s plan to visit Colombia not long before she died in 1997. “I think that Prince Harry being here today after that dream of his mom’s of visiting this country is an opportunity to show the best of our nation, to show who Colombians are,” she said. “We are people who in the midst of adversities do everything possible to give the best of ourselves.”
The politician also shared the motivation behind her inviting the royal and his wife to the South American nation. She said it came about after she watched their Netflix docu-series, Harry & Meghan, where they shared their experience dealing with the Royal Family after they got together.
The six-episode show was released in 2022 and gave an inside look at everything Meghan had dealt with as part of Harry’s family, and everything that informed their decision to step away from their royal duties.
“I saw the Netflix series about their life, their story and that moved me and motivated me to say that this is a woman who deserves to come to our country and tell her story and her exchange will undoubtedly be an empowerment to so many women in the world,” Francia shared about Meghan.
The VP now wants to team up with the couple to combat cyberbullying and online discrimination, and will also focus on women in leadership. So far, the country has given the Sussexes a warm welcome. They spent some time in the vice president’s home upon their arrival where they had coffee and pandebono, a traditional cheesy bread treat in Colombia. The couple will be provided with a full security detail during their stay.
