Channing Tatum’s dream of playing the charismatic anti-hero Gambit was a wild ride that fizzled out. His quest to bring the Marvel icon to life hit a rollercoaster of development hell, studio shake-ups, and, in the end, a gut-wrenching cancellation.

In a recent tweet from Discussing Film, the Blink Twice star opened up about how crushed he was when the Gambit project collapsed. Heartbroken, Tatum shared his side of the story:

Once Gambit went away, I was so traumatized. I shut off my Marvel machine. I haven’t been able to see any of the movies. I loved the character. It was too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play with him.

A few years ago, it was announced that the 44-year-old actor would star in a Gambit solo film, mixing charm with card-slinging action. Tatum imagined a romantic comedy superhero flick—a mix of heart and action that was as thrilling as a killer poker bluff. But after a whirlwind of directors and rewrites, Disney snagged Fox and canned the whole thing.

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt was all set to direct Gambit, but he left after four months. Next up, The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman was hired, but he left too. The Ring and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Black Pearl’s director Gore Verbinski was the next to take up this project. Verbinski had worked with Tatum on Logan Lucky. But again, before the movie could kick start filming, Verbinski left. Eventually, the film had to be canceled.

The cancellation hit hard, of course. Gambit wasn’t just a role for Tatum—it was his passion project. Despite the letdown, his love for Gambit is still alive. “I would love to play Gambit,” the actor said, keeping the dream flickering. While the Tatum-led Gambit remains a tease, his dedication shows just how much he believed in the character!
