Exclusive: If Walt Disney Studios had not acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, the Deadpool & Wolverine story would have been very different.

Deadpool trilogy actor Karan Soni reveals that Deadpool & Wolverine almost had a different Marvel story altogether prior to Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. With few Marvel movies releasing in 2024, there is a lot of anticipation surrounding Deadpool & Wolverine. As Ryan Reynolds returns as Wade Wilson, he will finally be entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At this year’s SXSW, Screen Rant exclusively chatted with Soni about his new movie, A Nice Indian Boy, where he also spoke a bit about his upcoming return as Dopinder as part of the Deadpool & Wolverine cast. Following the release of the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, it turns out that Soni had no idea the footage was coming, as he revealed how he found out about it:

I didn’t even know it was coming. They’re not telling me anything, which is good. Honestly, to bring it back to Roshan [Sethi], on our first date I recapped the plot of Deadpool 3, which I wasn’t supposed to. This was the Fox version, which didn’t get made because the studio got sold or whatever. But we just met, and I was desperate to impress him, and I just blurted the entire thing. I told him Hugh Jackman was gonna be in it – this was years before.

All to say I didn’t get a script this time, thank God! They didn’t even tell me the trailer was coming out. I got to watch it when it came out, and I’m excited to be a small part of it.

Screen Rant followed up by asking whether Soni could share what the initial story was going to be for the third Deadpool movie, and the actor revealed the following:

Yes, I think it’s online a little bit, so I can. It was going to be originally a roadtrip movie where Deadpool tries to save Christmas , so we all go to the North Pole.

Why Deadpool 3 Was Helped By Joining The MCU

Previous Deadpool Movies Were Made By Fox

In the long run, Deadpool & Wolverine will benefit greatly by becoming a Marvel Studios production. For years, the X-Men movies under 20th Century Fox had been struggling, with their cinematic universe slowly starting to fall apart. That is why Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox was not only a victory for Marvel Studios, as they finally have the X-Men and Fantastic Four movie rights back, but it allows Deadpool & Wolverine to potentially be the best film in the trilogy.

For someone like Reynolds, who is involved with Deadpool & Wolverine both in front and behind the camera, it clearly gives him more freedom to take Wade to new levels. Since Deadpool & Wolverine is going to be R-rated, they are not only maintaining the spirit of the Deadpool franchise but also giving them new material to work with in the larger context of the MCU. That was something that was a highlight of the first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, and will likely be amplified in the film itself.

What’s more exciting is to see what will happen to Wade after the events of Deadpool & Wolverine, as Reynolds could show up anywhere in the MCU. With the amount of characters and storylines that already exist in the MCU, Marvel Studios will be able to go in many different directions with Deadpool. But for now, Reynolds’ MCU journey will begin this summer in Deadpool & Wolverine.

A Nice Indian Boy will have its world premiere at SXSW on March 12.
