After recent Deadpool & Wolverine news, I’m even more convinced that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s titular mutant heroes will die in their upcoming MCU debut. Both Reynolds and Jackman originated their iconic superhero roles in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, but will be making the move permanently to the MCU in Phase 5. However, with Deadpool & Wolverine’s release date only days away, I’m growing increasingly more worried that the titular Deadpool and Wolverine won’t survive the events of the highly-anticipated movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine is scheduled to release in the United Kingdom on July 25, and a day later in the United States. This means Deadpool & Wolverine will be premiering in the same weekend as 2024’s San Diego Comic Con, which will see Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige take to the stage in Hall H on July 27 to provide new updates on the MCU’s future. This won’t be Marvel Studios’ only SDCC panel, however, but the details surrounding Deadpool & Wolverine’s own presentation haven’t filled me with hope about the mutant heroes’ fates.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s SDCC Panel Is Called A “Celebration Of Life” But I Don’t Trust It
While speaking to Deadline, Feige confirmed that, for the first time ever, Marvel Studios would host two presentations at SDCC, with the first focused solely on Deadpool & Wolverine. This will take place on July 25, the day of Deadpool & Wolverine’s UK release, and will see Feige, director Shawn Levy, and stars Reynolds and Jackman take the stage to commemorate the film’s opening. Entitled “Celebration of Life,” Deadpool & Wolverine’s panel has been built up to be a hugely entertaining occasion, but I think this is a red herring.
We’re also going to be in Hall H on Thursday for the first time ever. Marvel Studios is going to be in Hall H twice during Comic-Con. Thursday, of course, is the opening of Deadpool & Wolverine , so we’re going to be doing a fun Deadpool panel in Hall H to commemorate the opening and Shawn [Levy], Hugh [Jackman], Ryan [Reynolds] and I will be there.
The fact that the movie’s SDCC panel emphasizes that it’s a celebration of life suggests that Deadpool and Wolverine may not make it out of their MCU debut alive. Marvel Studios is no stranger to deliberately misdirecting its audiences, often to make moments in upcoming projects all the more surprising. It certainly seems like this is the case for Deadpool & Wolverine. The “Celebration of Life” title seems to imply some sort of memorial, funeral, or dedication, which makes me think Deadpool & Wolverine won’t end well for the titular heroes.
Why I Think Deadpool & Wolverine Might Die In Their First MCU Movie
It might seem unorthodox for Marvel Studios to kill off two of its newest heroes in their first MCU project, but I’m 95% convinced this will happen in Deadpool & Wolverine. The fact that Reynolds and Jackman will be portraying variants of Deadpool and Wolverine from alternate realities makes this much more likely. Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailers seem to feature the version of Deadpool from Fox’s X-Men franchise, but theories have posited that Jackman may be playing a Wolverine variant we’ve never seen before.
Deadpool and Wolverine will be joining the MCU as remnants of alternate universes.
Since Deadpool and Wolverine will be joining the MCU as remnants of alternate universes, and ones perhaps in danger of being pruned or falling victim to an incursion, their deaths seem very possible. Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to bid a final farewell to Fox’s X-Men franchise, and kick off the more destructive aspects of the Multiverse Saga, so I wouldn’t be surprised if these versions of the heroes are killed off, too. Going up against a villain as powerful as Cassandra Nova, and coming to blows with the TVA, Deadpool and Wolverine could be in serious trouble.
Where Deadpool & Wolverine Could Return In The MCU If They Don’t Die
Even if Deadpool and Wolverine do die in their MCU Phase 5 debut, this likely won’t be the end of their journey with Marvel Studios. The magic of the multiverse means variants of these heroes could take their place, and these new versions could even still be played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Deadpool & Wolverine is already expected to feature a number of weird and wonderful Deadpool and Wolverine variants, so one of these characters could become the official Merc with a Mouth or clawed X-Men member of the MCU.
Of course, the pair may also survive the events of Deadpool & Wolverine, and return to the MCU. Phase 6’s Avengers: Secret Wars seems like the most likely place for this to happen. As the final project in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, Avengers: Secret Wars has been theorized to include a huge number of returning heroes from both the MCU and other non-MCU Marvel franchises. The first teaser trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine featured a Secret Wars easter egg, which has me convinced that the movie will actively set up the exciting crossover event for the MCU.
