Netflix Just Confirmed a Sweet Magnolias Side Story. Here’s the Exciting News You Need to Know Before It Drops ⬇️

Sweet Magnolias - Joanna Garcia Swisher

On February 6, Netflix’s romantic drama series Sweet Magnolias returned with its fourth season, and it is needless to say that it brought a lot of romance and a lot of drama. For three seasons, Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen, the three magnolias of Serenity, were at the center of the show, tackling their problems or celebrating their highs together. Whether it is an upcoming wedding or a new job in a different city, Sweet Magnolias always has something new to dive into and explore how change affects the three best friends and everyone around them. Maybe, just maybe, though, four seasons of highlighting Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen’s life is enough, and it’s time for something new.

In particular, Maddie and Dana Sue’s children have always played an essential role in the Netflix series. Whatever they do, they always think of how it would affect Katie, Kyle, Ty, and Annie. This time around, though, Dana Sue’s teenage daughter Annie plays a particularly interesting role, which definitely has spinoff potential. Without further ado, let’s get into our dream Sweet Magnolias spinoff.

From the Magnolias to the Mini Magnolias

Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen are the heart of Sweet Magnolias, there is no doubt about it. Fundamentally, Sweet Magnolias is a show about heart-warming friendships. The three best friends lead with love, faith, and grace, at least for the majority of the time, and nothing is more important to them than their loved ones. Well, maybe margarita night, but, to be fair, their drinks always look like a whole irresistible masterpiece.

The first season of the Netflix series, which was released back in 2020, introduced the three friends as adults already, which means the viewers never got to see them at the high school stage they so often talk about. They share memories and funny incidents that happened back in the day, but the rest is up to the imagination. Seeing how easy-going Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen are with each other, it’s not hard to believe that they had a lot of fun, but it still would be interesting to see what they were like back then and how their friendship started.

The young years of the Magnolias are not a part of the show, but at least there is something else, maybe even more interesting, that was introduced in Season 4 of the comfort show. Dana Sue’s teenage daughter, Annie, has formed a close friendship with her school friends Cece and Lily. Annie had grown up watching her mother immensely valuing her best friends, calling their group the Magnolias, and having weekly margarita nights to celebrate their love and appreciation for each other.

Hence, it’s only natural that Annie and her friends aim to follow a similar pattern. During a milkshake night, the three of them try to find a name for their group and end up calling themselves mini magnolias. This moment felt like the perfect gateway into a Sweet Magnolias spinoff, which could follow Annie, Cece, and Lily and focus on how their friendship grows and changes as they leave school.

Will There Be a ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Spinoff?

Even though following the beginning stages of the mini magnolias, the younger generation of the original magnolias would be the perfect spinoff, it seems very unlikely. Unfortunately, in an interview with Deadline, the showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson said that a spinoff focusing on the mini magnolias was never the intention and isn’t in the plans.

Yes, Annie’s life, choices, and friendships were particularly highlighted in this new season of the romantic Netflix series. However, the reason behind it was to explore how Annie implemented the lessons she learned from her mother, as well as Maddie and Helen. She is extremely close with her mother and two aunts, often seeking their advice on various occasions.

Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen are all very intentional with their actions and always make it a point to support each other and everyone else around them. Putting Annie in a position where she implements their advice adds more value to the Magnolias’ words. Even though we likely won’t get to see a Sweet Magnolias spinoff about Annie and her friends, this exploration in the show still allows the viewers to see how big of an influence Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen truly have. Sweet Magnolias is available to stream on Netflix.
