Oscar Isaac's Moon Knight unmasked with the Screen Rant D23 overlay

Moon Knight‘s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been confirmed. So far, Oscar Isaac has only played Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley once in the MCU, leading Disney+’s Moon Knight series. Since the show’s release in March 2022, Isaac has yet to return for Moon Knight season 2 or another MCU project. However, the Fist of Khonshu has finally had his next MCU project announced: What If…?

At D23 2024: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Screen Rant is in attendance, Marvel Animation revealed with a sizzle reel that Moon Knight will be in What If…? season 3. It has yet to be confirmed if Oscar Isaac will return to voice Moon Knight, but since he is one of the MCU’s most recent heroes and What If…?‘s cast largely brings back MCU actors, that is likely. Moon Knight will be part of an Avengers team in a multiverse story with seemingly no connection to Moon Knight‘s ending. Check out the full description of the footage below:

“The What If…? season 3 footage features quick shots of mechs fighting Mega Hulk, Shang-Chi in a western setting, Wong in an exciting new armor, Red Guardian and Winter Soldier from the previously revealed episode in the season 3 trailer, Moon Knight in his MCU return, and Ironheart with what appears to be multiple Iron Legion drones.

Moon Knight will be part of an Avengers team that includes Captain America (Sam Wilson), Monica Rambeau, and others fighting in mechs against gamma monsters.”

What Moon Knight’s MCU Return Means For A Potential Season 2

Oscar Isaac Could Return To Marvel In Live-Action

What If…? season 3 will be the final entry in the animated multiverse series. It will also be the first time Moon Knight interacts with heroes in the wider MCU. The project could serve as the perfect tease for what Moon Knight’s dynamic with other popular characters could look like. If Isaac is truly coming back in the role, then a formal MCU return after What If…? season 3 would likely be in play.

There have been no major updates on the status of Moon Knight season 2 since the end of the series, with Isaac and the creatives involved in the project playing coy about a return of the popular show. While Isaac has not confirmed Moon Knight season 2, the actor has pretty much made it clear that he is in for the ride as the hero. In February, Oscar Isaac commented on a Moon Knight return, saying he was interested in a Midnight Suns project.

Moon Knight could be one of the 60+ reported characters of Avengers: Doomsday .

With Moon Knight back on a Marvel Studios project and Isaac interested in being part of a major supernatural team, it seems like the hero still has quite a few MCU appearances ahead of him. If Moon Knight’s role in What If…? season 3 is well received, then maybe Marvel could be pressed to make Moon Knight season 2 a priority amid the MCU’s ever-changing TV landscape. With the hero coming back to the MCU, even if in a multiverse project, Moon Knight season 2 hopes finally start to pick up some steam.
