Miles Morales and his allies will return for a third Spider-Verse adventure following the exciting ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

With Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse finding critical and commercial success, attention is now shifting to the franchise’s third film, titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which will continue Miles Morales’s wall-crawling adventures as he attempts to stop Spot’s destruction of the multiverse. Straying away from the familiar take on Peter Parker’s origin story, the Spider-Verse series kicked off a new cinematic adventure for Spider-Man, starting with 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The Oscar-winning animated film focused on Miles Morales, a younger Spider-Man who collaborates with many other Spider-People from alternate universes to take down the Kingpin.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s universal coming-of-age themes, coupled with a talented voice cast and a stellar hip-hop soundtrack, ensured its near-unanimous positive reception, and Across the Spider-Verse followed suit. While multiversal crossovers and character variants are no longer rare in superhero media, the Spider-Verse franchise’s immense number of Spider-Man cameos and beautiful art style give it a unique place in the market. While it may not be the end for Miles, Gwen, and the others, Beyond the Spider-Verse will bring Sony’s animated trilogy to a close.

The most recent news regarding Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse comes in the wake of the 2024 Oscars. After Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse lost out on the Oscar for best animated feature to The Boy And The Heron, Miles Morales voice actor Shameik Moore took to social media to express his frustration, going on to state that, “Spiderverse has impacted ALOT of lives, we may not have been acknowledged tonight but life goes on, and BEYOND….. yea get ready,” further teasing the third movie in a way that suggests it will be even bigger than the films that came before it.

The Spider-Verse’s main Miles Morales voice actor, Shameik Moore, also teased more of what to expect from Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse in a February 2024 interview, stating: “Action…you can expect Miles and Gwen. You can expect everything [laughs] you’re expecting the continuation from the second one. You can expect to see The Spot; you can expect some action-packed energy and some dilemmas and problems to solve.”

The Spider-Man movie timeline has had some additional light shed on it by Spider-Man film producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed in an interview with Variety that Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse are the next release priorities before the prospective live-action Miles Morales movie that has been teased as “in the works.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse does not currently have a release date. When it was announced in 2021, along with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-VerseBeyond the Spider-Verse was set for a March 29, 2024 release date. However, in July 2023, Sony announced Beyond the Spider-Verse had been removed from the studio’s release calendar. At the time, the studio was said to be considering a number of new possible release dates, depending on the lengths of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes – but no update has yet been provided since both strikes were resolved.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Is Happening

In terms of the talent behind the scenes on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Kemp Powers (co-director of Soul), Justin K. Thompson (production designer on Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse), and Joaquim Dos Santos (director for several episodes of Justice League: Unlimited) are returning to helm the sequel. Regarding writing duties, the trio will still rely on the Spider-Verse franchise’s producers, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who will be co-writing the screenplay with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scribe David Callahan.

The writing and directing teams are the same for both Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse because they were being shot simultaneously and are heavily connected. In 2021, Lord and Miller explained that they had too many ideas to fit into one movie, prompting them to divide the story into two sequels instead. The duo will be joined again by Spider-Man franchise producers Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Christina Steinberg. Initially titled “Across the Spider-Verse Part Two”, the third installment was later given the name Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, though it’s still very much one continuous story.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Cast: Who Will Return?

With Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse still focusing on Miles Morales, Shameik Moore is expected to return for voice duties, and, given the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse, the rest of the Spider-Verse main cast will likely be returning as well. Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Woman and Jake Johnson’s Peter B, Parker are set to play a big role in the trilogy closer, as are the members of the newly-formed spider-team: Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney) Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), and Spider-Byte (Amandla Stenberg).

The same can be said for Miles’s current opposition, Spot (Jason Schwartzman), Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), and a variant of Aaron Davis (Mahershala Ali). Given the strong family-centric themes that dominate Miles’s adolescent hero arc, it is certain that both Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Vélez will yet again be heard as the hero’s parents in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Story Details: What Could Happen?

Details around the plot of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse have been kept under wraps, but the massive cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse gives a solid indication of where the story is going. In Across the Spider-Verse, Miles finds himself at odds with the Spider Society for attaining powers he shouldn’t have and causing a domino effect that threatens the interconnected realities of all spider-people. Running away from Spider-Man 2099 to try and change his father’s fate, Miles finds himself stuck in the hostile, Spider-Man-less Earth 42.

While Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will open with Miles confronting his own variant – who has become the Prowler – Gwen and her newly formed team of allies will try to save him. However, based on unused Spider-Verse test footage involving the variant Miles and his Uncle Aaron nabbing medical supplies to help others, and the description of Prowler Miles as a “vigilante” in Spider-Verse concept art, it appears Spider-Man is more likely to team up with the seemingly actually well-intentioned duo, and eventually win them over after their less-than-friendly first meeting.

Of course, Miles will likely need the extra allies, given all of this will happen while Miguel O’Hara attempts to preserve the multiversal canon, and Spot continues his growth into a truly terrifying embodiment of multiversal travel. Beyond that, however, no specifics are currently known.

Will The Spider-Verse Continue After Spider-Man Beyond The Spider-Verse?

Though the lack of plot specifics known about Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse means audiences can’t know exactly what will happen, it has been confirmed that the movie will close out the main storyline. Though the events of the sequel already suggested its follow-up would be the final movie in the series, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller confirmed in a June 2023 interview with Entertainment Online that the installment will be “the end of Miles Morales’ trilogy.”

However, there are other spinoffs in the Spider-Verse series, including the released The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, as well as other releases like Spider-Woman, and Spider-Man: Octopus Girl. As such, there is a chance that the Spider-Verse will continue after Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, and potentially continue long after if the overall franchise proves popular enough, meaning the trilogy could be the origins of an entirely new expansive on-screen multiverse alongside the MCU.
