MCU’s Spider-Man Trilogy Director Offers Advice To Spider-Man 4 Successor

Three Spider-Men teaming up in Spider-Man No Way Home

Marvel Cinematic Universe director Jon Watts, who helmed Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man trilogy, reveals his advice for whichever filmmaker will take on Spider-Man 4. One of the most highly anticipated movies coming up for Marvel Studios following the Spider-Man: No Way Home ending is naturally Spider-Man 4, which will showcase Peter Parker in his new story arc. While Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are actively developing Spider-Man 4, it has yet to be determined when the movie will actually start filming, let alone be released in theaters.

Collider recently spoke to Watts at this year’s CCXP in Mexico City, where they asked him about any advice he would give to whoever ends up directing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4. After having directed Holland’s first MCU trilogy, Watts shared the following:

I have a very practical bit of Spider-Man advice, and I think every Spider-Man director goes through it. It doesn’t look good when someone is just swinging on a rope. You think you’re gonna go in there, you’re like, ‘we’re gonna do it all practical. We’re gonna get a stuntman. We’re gonna be swinging around.’ It’s boring. It looks dumb. It looks like a monkey swinging on a vine when you put someone on just a rope. Don’t waste your time. That’s my advice to the next Spider-Man director.

How Spider-Man 4 Will Be Different To The MCU’s Previous Movie Trilogy

Tom Holland's Spider-Man during a fiery battle in Spider-Man Far From Home

Throughout Holland’s original Spider-Man trilogy, the MCU rapidly increased the stakes as he dealt with more threats outside New York. Both in his own films and other MCU movies that he appeared in, Spider-Man would deal with dangerous foes like aliens, as well as enemies across the larger multiverse. Even though it has yet to be confirmed what is going on with the Spider-Man 4 story, there have been rumors that it will focus more on Peter’s street-level adventures, making his second movie arc more grounded.

However, the biggest way that Spider-Man 4 will be from Holland’s Spider-Man movies is the fact that Peter is now living in a world where no one knows him anymore following the ending of No Way Home. While he had resources like the Avengers in the past, even Spider-Man’s allies don’t know who is underneath the mask at this point. This will allow Spider-Man 4 to take Peter’s arc on an even more personal trajectory, as he can only depend on himself going forward.

It wouldn’t be shocking if Spider-Man 4 does indeed start filming sometime this year, as rumors have been swirling about a fall shoot. Given how Spider-Man 4 is being envisioned as the start of a new trilogy for Holland, it makes sense why it is taking a bit longer for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios to nail down the final details. Hopefully, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures will have more news to announce regarding Spider-Man 4 sooner rather than later.
