Following a new tease about a possible hero return, there is a chance that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be walking back on a shocking event.
It seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be retconning the biggest — and most exciting — plot point of the most controversial Netflix Marvel show — Iron Fist. Finn Jones gave life to Danny Rand, aka the immortal Iron Fist, protector of Kun Lun, sworn enemy of the Hand, as he so often put on the show. Jones appeared as Danny in Iron Fist‘s two seasons, as well as The Defenders crossover limited series, and one of the best episodes of Luke Cage season 2. Iron Fist season 2‘s ending marked the finish line for his time in the role.
Iron Fist was the most criticized of the Netflix Marvel shows, though one of the harsh realities of rewatching The Defenders Saga is that Iron Fist was canceled just as it got good. Iron Fist season 2 was a major improvement on the show’s debut in more ways than one, and part of that was not directly tied to Jones’ Danny Rand, but other characters, though he did improve as well. However, a new MCU tease could hint that the most exciting moment in Iron Fist season 2 — and the whole show, really — could get walked back by Marvel Studios.
Finn Jones Has Teased A Return As Iron Fist
The MCU Is Bringing Back Netflix Characters
Recently, Danny Rand actor Finn Jones shared an Iron Fist return tease that led to speculation about his return as the hero in the MCU years after Iron Fist was canceled. Jones shared a photo that showed an open bag with an issue of “Power Man and Iron Fist” on display. Since before the Marvel Netflix shows were canceled, fans had asked for a spinoff series — Heroes for Hire — starring Jones as Iron Fist and Mike Colter as Luke Cage to be made. The comic book in Jones’ photo presents both characters, and it comes at an interesting time.
Marvel Studios has confirmed that The Defenders Saga is canon to the MCU. Adding to that, Jon Bernthal is back filming as the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again, the perfect MCU project for Jones’ Iron Fist and the other Netflix heroes to return in. However, if Jones were to come back as Danny with the power of the Iron Fist, the MCU would be retconning the best moment in Iron Fist‘s two seasons. At the end of the show, Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing — Iron Fist‘s fan-favorite character — was given the Iron Fist power by Danny Rand.
Danny Rand May Return As Iron Fist In Daredevil: Born Again But He Shouldn’t
Iron Fist Was The Most Criticized Marvel Netflix Hero
Daredevil: Born Again is the perfect project not only for Jones’ possible Iron Fist return, but also for that of Jessica Jones actress Krysten Ritter, Luke Cage actor Mike Colter, and more stars from The Defenders Saga. The series stars Charlie Cox back as Daredevil, with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk set to become the Mayor of New York City, which — if following the comics — should lead to vigilantes like Daredevil and the Punisher being hunted down by mercenary groups and more. Jones’ Iron Fist return tease comes as Daredevil: Born Again is filming.
While it would make sense for the actor to come back as Iron Fist in the series, that does not mean it would be Marvel’s most exciting choice to do so. There were a lot of valid reasons why Jones’ Iron Fist was the most criticized hero from the Netflix Marvel shows. From poor fight choreography for a martial arts expert to repetitive dialogue and more, Iron Fist was poorly handled. While Jones showed improvement in the second seasons of Iron Fist and Luke Cage, there is simply too much baggage for the actor to come back as Danny Rand.
Danny Rand Should Officially Pass On The Iron Fist Mantle In The MCU
There Are Two Prime Candidates To Take On The Superhero Identity
Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing was the most consistently good part of Netflix’s Iron Fist. While Danny Rand faltered, Colleen became one of the MCU’s best hand-to-hand fighters, with a heart of gold, a sense of duty, and Henwick’s signature charm. By the end of the series, Colleen received Danny’s power, and it seemed like Iron Fist‘s most exciting chapter was about to start, only for the show to be canceled. The MCU could make that right by bringing Henwick back as Colleen and making her the new Iron Fist.
Even if Jones’ Iron Fist return tease pans out, the actor could be coming back only to pass on the Iron Fist mantle to someone else. Daredevil: Born Again should only feature returning Netflix characters Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, and Bullseye for a couple episodes, which would be more than enough for Danny to make someone else the MCU’s Iron Fist. If it is not Colleen, Marvel Comics teased in recent years another character who could be the MCU’s Iron Fist, Lin Lie/Sword Master. With Daredevil: Born Again filming, concrete news about Iron Fist‘s MCU future could come soon.
