A report suggests that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine is the reason why Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans will never face off in the MCU!

Deadpool, ironman and Captain America

Ryan Reynolds changed the rules of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he starred in the iconic 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine. However, there is one rule that Reynolds cannot change… the death of a character in the cinematic universe.

Chris Evans reprised his role of The Human Torch from his earlier role in Fantastic Four and the world loved it. However, what happened next to the character might have major ramifications for the future of the MCU.

Ryan Reynolds Prevented a Chris Evans vs. Robert Downey Jr. Battle

Well not the actors fighting on the sets but in the future of the MCU, Chris Evans could have reprised his role again in Avengers: Secret Wars or Avengers: Doomsday. However, that is out of the question now.

Chris Evans returned as Human Torch

In Deadpool & Wolverine, Chris Evans appeared alongside Ryan Reynolds and yelled “Flame On!” to reveal that he was The Human Torch (not Captain America). He describes the character of Cassandra Nova (the villain) and what happens next is not so-pretty.

The Human Torch is killed when Nova uses her power to strip his skin and commands Alioth to attack his position. Suffice it to say, The Human Torch does not survive the event. That is where the problem lies.

If Evans’ character was kept alive, we could have very well seen him joining forces with the new and old Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday. This would have allowed Robert Downey Jr. (as Doctor Doom) and Chris Evans (as Human Torch) to come face-to-face with each other (again).

Since ‘someone’ decided to kill off the character in Deadpool & Wolverine, there are no hopes that Evans will ever face off against Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU again. Speaking of RDJ, did you know he was also going to give a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Robert Downey Jr. Was Asked To Cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine

Wonder how that meeting went. In all seriousness though, Robert Downey Jr. was indeed asked for a cameo in Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine but the actor had to reject the opportunity.

What’s harrowing is that the writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese had no idea that Downey Jr. was going to appear as Doctor Doom in the MCU. Thus, the denying of the actor seemed a bit odd to them.

In an interview with IndieWire, the writers talked about how they tried to pitch the cameo to Downey Jr. but the actor kept on insisting ‘no’.

Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about the Doctor Doom. And there’s no way he was going to do both. And then we said, “Oh, Downey doesn’t say ‘no’ to Ryan Reynolds, does he?

They further continued, No one says no to Ryan Reynolds. And Ryan gave him the hard press. We wrote scenes, and Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know behind the scenes was this Doctor Doom thing.

All in all, if Robert Downey Jr. had agreed, then we might have had Chris Evans and Downey Jr. sharing the screen once again. However, the gods of the MCU seemed to have different plans for the actors.

Deadpool & Wolverine received a rating of 8/10 on IMDB and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. With a plethora of cameos and Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the lead, Deadpool & Wolverine is screening in theaters across the world.
