Marvel Fans Spot Spider-Man Connection To Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverine’s second trailer may be hiding a clever homage to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in the form of a clever fight scene recreation.

The second Deadpool & Wolverine trailer may have sneaked in a reference to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, as suggested by eagle-eyed Marvel fans. Deadpool & Wolverine‘s second trailer is full of clues about the movie’s multiversal plot, including the return of a few long-absent mutants from Fox’s X-Men franchise and a hint at the tragic origin of Wolverine’s original universe. Apart from a friendly nod to Deadpool’s creator Rob Liefeld in a background easter egg, the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer may have also paid homage to Spider-Man director Sam Raimi.

On X, user Multiverso Marvel shares a video comparison of a Deadpool and Wolverine’s fight in the trailer right below Peter Parker’s school fight with Flash Thompson from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. In those particular shots, Wolverine performs the exact same punch combo as Joe Manganiello’s Flash, and Deadpool dodges the blows the exact same way as Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. The only difference between the two scenes is that the camera cuts to a different angle in the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer. Watch the footage below:

More Likely It’s A Case Of Reused Fight Choreography In Superhero Movies

Marvel Studios has grown increasingly confident in adding easter eggs and references to non-MCU Marvel movies, especially now that the concept of the multiverse allows the MCU to acknowledge and incorporate previous movies and shows into the franchise. Combined with Deadpool’s self-awareness, this freedom makes Deadpool & Wolverine very likely to feature dozens of nods to movies like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Besides namedropping characters and actors, Deadpool could reference other Marvel movies by recreating some of their memorable scenes.

The fight moves in the “Deadpool vs Wolverine” fight shown in the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer are an almost perfect recreation of the “Peter Parker vs Flash Thompson” fight from Spider-Man. While the similarities between both fight scenes could be the sign of a hidden homage, they could have been accidental, and it’s possible that this part of Deadpool & Wolverine‘s fight choreography was simply reused. The double jab, lead hook, and rear uppercut combo isn’t too complicated, and the corresponding dodge is even simpler.

Only Deadpool & Wolverine‘s release will confirm whether such similarities are a conscious homage to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man or a mere coincidence. If it’s the former, then Deadpool is likely to acknowledge it with a self-aware joke, perhaps calling himself “Peter Parker” or calling Wolverine “Flash Thompson”. If it’s the latter, the similarities may not be as evident within the context of the scene, where both titular characters likely perform much more complex fight moves.
