Mark Ruffalo Breaks 21-Year Marvel Cameo Trend as the Sole Hulk Actor

Mark Ruffalo has played the MCU’s Hulk for over a decade, and he’s the only Hulk actor who has broken an old cameo trend specific to the character.

Mark Ruffalo has played the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Hulk for over a decade, but he has become the only Hulk actor to break a 21-year-old Marvel cameo trend. The MCU has brought some of the most popular characters from Marvel Comics to life, though not all of them have had smooth transitions to the big screen. Falling into the latter category is Bruce Banner/Hulk, who, even though he is now best known for Mark Ruffalo’s performance, had a very different start in the MCU.

Bruce Banner’s MCU debut was in The Incredible Hulk, where he was played by Edward Norton. The Incredible Hulk was the second movie in the MCU, right after Iron Man, but it’s often forgotten, not only due to its Hulk recast but because the MCU took too long to connect it to the rest of the movies. Mark Ruffalo took over the role in The Avengers and has played Banner/Hulk ever since, and he’s now also the only Hulk actor to break a very special Marvel cameo trend.

Mark Ruffalo Is The Only Hulk Movie Actor Not To Be In A Project With A Lou Ferrigno Cameo

Lou Ferrigno played the first live-action version of the Hulk in the 1978 TV series The Incredible Hulk, alongside Bill Bixby, who played Bruce Banner. Ferrigno went on to play and voice the Hulk in various TV movies and series, earning a place in Marvel history. Ferrigno’s legacy in the history of the Hulk is such that he was involved in the character’s solo movies, Hulk and The Incredible Hulk. In Ang Lee’s Hulk (2003), Ferrigno provided the voice for the Hulk and had a cameo appearance as a security guard.

In Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk, Ferrigno once more lent his voice to the Hulk and had a cameo appearance as a security guard, but Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk appearances haven’t had a Ferrigno cameo yet. Although Ferrigno has had uncredited voice collaborations in The AvengersAvengers: Age of Ultron, and Thor: Ragnarok, he hasn’t had a proper appearance in any MCU movie after The Incredible Hulk, meaning that Ruffalo is the only big-screen Hulk who hasn’t had a project with a Ferrigno cameo.

Why Lou Ferrigno Hasn’t Cameod In A Mark Ruffalo Movie

Lou Ferrigno might not have had a cameo in a Mark Ruffalo MCU movie yet because his version of the Hulk hasn’t had a solo movie. Ruffalo made his MCU debut in The Avengers and has since appeared in all Avengers movies, Thor: Ragnarok, and the post-credits scenes of Iron Man 3Captain Marvel, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Rumors about a solo Hulk movie in the MCU have been floating around for years, but it now seems like Hulk won’t be getting a solo movie in the MCU.

Although Ferrigno could have a cameo in any of Ruffalo’s MCU movies, even if they are team-up movies, the presence of other heroes would take attention away from Ferrigno’s appearance. Having Ferrigno in a cameo appearance is a way to pay homage to him and his role as Hulk, which is why it would feel more appropriate to have him in a Hulk movie. However, it’s also worth noting that Ferrigno isn’t exactly a fan of the MCU and its Hulk portrayal, which would surely influence his decision to appear in this connected universe.

Lou Ferrigno has said the MCU’s portrayal of the Hulk “spoiled it” as he should be an angry, growling creature.

In an interview with Syracuse in 2022, Ferrigno said he was “disappointed” in the MCU’s Smart Hulk, as he feels the Hulk needs to be “authentic, hideous, more organic”, and this version relies too much on CGI. At Canada’s Hamilton Comic Con in 2019, Ferrigno also shared his thoughts on the MCU’s portrayal of the Hulk, saying they have “spoiled it” as he should be an angry, growling creature instead of having full dialogue with other characters. It’s to be seen if Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk will finally share the screen with Lou Ferrigno in the near future or if he will be the only big-screen Hulk to not do so.
