Kevin Feige Tackles Fantastic Four Timeline & Multiverse Theories As He Confirms Filming Date: “Those Are Smart Observations”

Fantastic Four in MCU cast reveal poster

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige shares new details about The Fantastic Four. The movie is one of the most anticipated projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With The Fantastic Four part of the MCU’s 2025 movie slate, filming needs to begin soon. After many rumors about when the reboot of Marvel’s First Family would enter production, as well as if it would be set in the 1960s and/or an alternate universe, Feige chimes in with reveals and a tease.

On The Official Marvel PodcastKevin Feige confirmed that The Fantastic Four will begin filming on July 29 and that the movie is indeed a period piece. Feige also played coy about the movie’s alternate universe rumors. San Diego Comic-Con 2024 ends on July 28, meaning The Fantastic Four starts filming on July 29. After Marvel released official concept art and a poster for the movie, fans were certain that the film took place in the 1960s. Feige has confirmed those rumors but only teased The Fantastic Four‘s possible multiverse story. Check out the full quotes below:

“We start filming at the end of July… The day after [San Diego] Comic-Con is the first day of filming on Fantastic Four.”

“Yes, yes, very much so. It is a period.”

“There were a lot of smart people, who noticed that that cityscape didn’t look exactly like the New York that we know, or the New York that existed in the ’60s in our world. And those are smart observations, I’ll say.”

What Kevin Feige’s Comments Mean For The Fantastic Four Movie

The Multiverse Saga Has An Epic Next Chapter

While he stopped short of confirming any multiverse connections for The Fantastic Four, Feige’s comments do make the theory that the movie is set in another universe more likely. Marvel Studios’ President saying, “Those are smart observations,” regarding the differences between the New York City cityscape presented in The Fantastic Four‘s Human Torch poster and the real world, all but seals the deal. With Feige also confirming the movie is a period piece, the theory only grows in strength.

The New York City in The Fantastic Four poster is retro-futuristic, and it would not fit in with what we know of the MCU’s past. As such, while The Fantastic Four will take place in the 1960s, it will most likely be somewhere else in the multiverse, not Earth-616. Besides the cityscape on the movie’s poster, The Fantastic Four multiverse theory also finds ground in the film’s Silver Surfer casting.

Instead of bringing in Norrin Radd, the most popular version of the character, The Fantastic Four cast Julia Garner as the Shalla-Bal version of Silver Surfer. In the comics, the character was only the Silver Surfer in a series that took place on an alternate Earth, which adds to the list of hints the MCU movie could be exploring the multiverse. The Fantastic Four being set in a new universe would be for the best, as it would explain why the team has never appeared before and would expand the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. With Feige’s tease, it becomes very likely.
