Jonathan Majors as Kang in the MCU

Marvel Studios finally reveals some huge updates for the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man animated series, which includes the casting of a major villain from Marvel Comics lore. One of the most beloved heroes in the MCU timeline is getting another depiction in the franchise as Spider-Man is getting his own animated TV show. However, Peter Parker’s new story will be explored within the context of the multiverse, with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man taking place in an alternate universe while still having similarities to the MCU.

Marvel Studios brought Marvel Animation to D23 2024, where Screen Rant is in attendance, to promote their next batch of animated properties. One of them was Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which has been in the works since 2021, with the show finally receiving some huge updates. Colman Domingo, who was speculated to be joining the MCU as the new Kang the Conqueror, is boarding the franchise, but as Norman Osborn in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Hudson Thomas was also announced to be voicing Spider-Man himself, after playing the iconic web-slinger in What If…? Domingo expressed how thrilled he is to follow in the footsteps of Willem Dafoe, saying, “I don’t know why I’m drawn to villains. I’m a good human being. But I believe everyone has the power to turn.”

How Norman Osborn Is Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s Iron Man Replacement

New Peter Parker and Spider-Man in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

While the general audience and long-time comic book fans know Norman as the villainous Green Goblin, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is taking a new approach with the character. In this reality, Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, was not the one to serve as Peter’s mentor (and eventual father figure), despite the iconic hero still existing in this timeline. Instead, Norman will be filling that role in Peter’s life, while also being his man in the chair for Spider-Man, a popular reference to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies.

According to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man showrunner Jeff Trammell, the significant differences between Tony and Norman are how “Norman has good intentions, but Norman has never embodied the hero role in the way that Tony [Stark] has.” Trammell also added, “The methods he’s sharing with Peter may not turn out in everyone’s best interest,” suggesting that perhaps their collaboration will not go as well as Norman had initially hoped.

Whether this means that Norman could still become the Green Goblin in this reality remains to be seen. Since Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has already been renewed for season 2, any potential fallout between Norman and Peter could easily continue when the show returns. Hopefully, an official Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man release date and trailer will be revealed in the coming months.
