Joaquin Phoenix returns as the Clown Prince of Crime in the first Joker: Folie à Deux trailer, setting up the new DC sequel. Todd Phillips is getting ready to expand his Elseworlds franchise following the critical and financial success of the Joker movie in 2019. Joker: Folie à Deux, which will be the only DC movie to release in 2024, will chart new territory in the comic book movie genre as the sequel will be a musical film.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the trailer, giving the world a taste of the comic book musical film with the Joker: Folie à Deux cast. Check out the Joker: Folie à Deux footage below:

Last week, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that the first Joker: Folie à Deux trailer would be arriving today, with the movie only six months away from being released in theaters. The studio additionally released a poster featuring Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn dancing, previewing a scene featured in the trailer.

What The Joker: Folie à Deux Trailer Reveals About The Sequel

Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn Is Way Different From Any Other Version

The Joker: Folie à Deux trailer explores Arthur’s current life, now being a patient at Arkham Asylum. However, Arkham Asylum is clearly not going to keep him locked up for long as the footage tackles his return to the public eye, with more support for Joker than ever. Similar to the first Joker movie, there definitely appears to be a political element, as many Gotham City citizens are divided on Arthur’s Joker character and whether he should be freed.

With a lot of mystery surrounding Lady Gaga’s Harley, the Joker: Folie à Deux trailer finally gives a better idea of how they are approaching the iconic character in comparison to Margot Robbie’s iteration from the DCEU movie timeline. Rather than being his psychiatrist, Harley is also an Arkham Asylum inmate, which at least maintains the connection that they build through the institution. In general, there are a lot of moments showing their chaotic energy that will be felt throughout Joker: Folie à Deux, from them committing crimes to a few teases of their musicality.

The only song that is highlighted in the Joker: Folie à Deux trailer is “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” likely indicating it will be one of the songs performed in the movie. It wouldn’t be shocking if the second Joker: Folie à Deux trailer ends up leaning more into the musical numbers to give audiences a better idea of how that element plays into the story. Though only a teaser trailer has been released, Joker: Folie à Deux already looks like it will be something very unique in the ever-growing comic book film landscape.
