Jessica Jones Star Krysten Ritter Sparks New MCU Return Rumors With Bold New Look

Krysten Ritter, the lead star of Marvel Television’s Jessica Jones series, has shared a new image that could be teasing her return to the MCU.

Krysten Ritter has teased her return to the MCU as Jessica Jones with a new-and-improved look. Krysten Ritter, star of Breaking Bad and Veronica Mars, made her debut as Jessica Jones in 2015 in Marvel Television’s Jessica Jones, the second series in Netflix’s Defenders Saga, which also included Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher. Krysten Ritter was last seen as Jessica Jones in 2019’s Jessica Jones season 3, but has been heavily rumored to be reprising the role alongside Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, and several other returning Defenders Saga actors, in the MCU proper.

While Krysten Ritter’s return as Jessica Jones hasn’t yet been confirmed, the actor may have just teased her involvement in the MCU’s upcoming street-level stories. On May 9, 2024, Krysten Ritter shared an image of herself with purple hair on her social media story. While this could just be Ritter showcasing a bold new look to her fans, purple-colored hair is one of Jessica Jones’ trademarks in Marvel Comics, during a time when Jones was operating as the superhero Jewel, suggesting Krysten Ritter may be reprising the role of Jessica Jones with a more comic-accurate look in the MCU’s future.

What Krysten Ritter’s New Purple Hair Could Suggest About Jessica Jones’ MCU Return

Jessica Jones in dark series in the MCU

Throughout Marvel Television’s Jessica Jones series, the darker aspects of Jessica Jones’ personality were put on display. Notably, the series began in the months after her experiences with David Tennant’s Kilgrave, an adaptation of Marvel Comics’ mind-controller, the Purple Man. Jones’ time with Kilgrave had a huge impact on her, both in Marvel Comics and in the MCU, culminating in her reverting to darker hair, briefly becoming the Knightress, and becoming a private investigator, founding Alias Investigations. This formed the inspiration behind Jessica Jones’ storyline over all three seasons, but Ritter could tell a different story with her MCU return.

Krysten Ritter showcasing her new purple-colored hair hints at Jessica Jones returning to the MCU as a bona fide superhero, perhaps adopting the Jewel moniker, and potentially even gaining a comic-accurate superhero suit. Jones’ white-and-blue costume was teased in Jessica Jones season 1, and poked fun at by both Jones and Rachael Taylor’s Trish Walker, but Jessica Jones could get a modernized, comic-accurate upgrade in the MCU’s future. Not much is known about Jessica Jones’ time as Jewel in Marvel Comics, despite operating as the hero for roughly four years, but Marvel Studios could explore this period for the hero.

Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones was one of the most popular aspects of Marvel Television’s Defenders Saga, so it would be great to see her reprise the role in the MCU proper. Marvel Studios recently confirmed the Defenders Saga to be MCU canon, following many Daredevil characters confirmed to be returning for Phase 5’s upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. These updates suggest that Krysten Ritter, and potentially Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist, could also be revealed to be reprising their roles. Bringing Jessica Jones back into the MCU would be an excellent choice, especially as an honest-to-goodness superhero.
