Jeremy Renner Responds To Original Avengers Reunion Rumors As Secret Wars Approaches

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye from the Hawkeye TV show with the cast of 2012's The Avengers

Longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Jeremy Renner gives his thoughts on a potential reunion with his original Avengers cast members in Avengers: Secret Wars. While the MCU is moving forward with new heroes and villains, many are still hoping for the day when they get to see the six original Avengers who brought the team to life all the way back in Phase 1. As there have been plenty of cameos in The Multiverse Saga, time will tell if some of the MCU veteran actors will be back in Phases 5 and 6.

While promoting his new series, Mayor of Kingstown, on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Renner was asked whether or not he thinks Hawkeye will get to reunite with the original Avengers members as they are leading up to Avengers: Secret Wars. While updates on Avengers: Secret Wars have been limited to this point, Renner shared the following:

Jeremy Renner: What’s the idea to get The Avengers together? How and why? What’s the purpose of it? I don’t know what this is. [When asked if he ever Googles Avengers: Secret Wars.] I’m always down for it, man. I think it’d be great. It’d be awesome. I’d love to be with everyone again.

Maybe if enough time goes by, right? I think it kind of has at this point, but also what is the point of the narrative [and] the story? These are beloved characters. We did spend 23 films together essentially as a collective. What is the reason? What is the story? Do you have to do more after that? How do you ever resolve this?

When is it ever gonna feel like, ‘Everyone gets their little bow, nobody died, it feels great!’ What happens here? I’ve got feelings about it. I think everybody does. I think the guys that died have feelings about it.

Can Avengers: Secret Wars Reunite The Avengers Without Ruining MCU Deaths?

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the MCU.

While it will be some time before Avengers: Secret Wars plot details get clarified, there are ways for the MCU to bring back the Avengers actors whose characters passed away in Avengers: Endgame. Even though Steve Rogers hasn’t died on screen, it’s fair to assume that he will have likely died of old age by the time they get to Avengers: Secret Wars. However, this is where the multiverse will come to use at its finest.

From a compelling story perspective, it would be fascinating to see Robert Downey. Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson come back as Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow variants rather than see their original versions come back. Avengers: Secret Wars could explore worlds where Tony, Steve, and Natasha perhaps lost their respective Thor, Hulk, or Hawkeye, serving as an emotional parallel to Earth-616. Having the six players then come together and see the people they respectively lost would allow Avengers: Secret Wars to really pull the audience members’ heartstrings.

It would genuinely be shocking if Kevin Feige didn’t bring back the whole crew for Avengers: Secret Wars by the time they wrap The Multiverse Saga. Given how Avengers: Secret Wars is rumored to operate as a soft reboot for the MCU, this would likely be the last time the six cast members could share the screen again. Hopefully, movement on Avengers: Secret Wars will start to happen later this year, including Marvel Studios finally tapping a director.
