James Gunn Drops Bombshell: Superman Script Already in the Works for DC’s Next Big Hit

James Gunn Update: "Pre-Writing My Next DC Studios Project" & More

James Gunn has revealed that he is currently “pre-writing” his next DC Studios project while managing post-production on Superman: Legacy and Peacemaker Season 2. This announcement has prompted speculation about which DCU project could be next, as the studio continues to expand its interconnected universe.

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has confirmed he is already “pre-writing” his next DC project while overseeing post-production on Superman: Legacy and Peacemaker Season 2.

Gunn stated on Threads, “The bulk of my time is dealing with post-production on Superman and Peacemaker, but I’m also spending a fair amount of time pre-writing my next DC Studios project and watching dailies and offering ideas on the other projects. It’s much less overwhelming than when I was directing.”

The filmmaker is also producing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is currently in production as the second film in the new DC Universe. Alongside this, the animated series Creature Commandos, written and executive produced by Gunn, wrapped its first season earlier this month.

What could Gunn’s next DCU project be?

Among the potential projects James Gunn is pre-writing are The Authority, Booster Gold, or a Superman sequel.

Gunn previously described The Authority as “one of my real passion projects,” explaining, “They are basically good-intentioned, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments—basically, whatever they want to do to make the world better” (via DC).

Another possibility is Booster Gold, a series about a time-traveling hero who uses his future knowledge and technology to gain fame and fortune. Gunn may also be working on an unannounced Superman sequel. This project could expand on the story from Superman: Legacy and possibly feature Supergirl after her debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

DC Studios has several upcoming projects in development, including The Brave and the Bold, Paradise Lost, Waller, and Lanterns. Gunn’s involvement in pre-writing highlights the broader roadmap for the DC Universe. This interconnected universe officially begins with Superman: Legacy, set to release on July 11, 2025.
