Channing Tatum's Gambit and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool in the MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine

I would love to see Channing Tatum return for a solo Gambit movie in the MCU, and I know which Marvel Comics storyline would be perfect to adapt after Deadpool & Wolverine. I found Channing Tatum’s Gambit to be one of the most exciting and satisfying characters to appear in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, as the actor had lobbied for the role of the Cajun mutant for almost two decades. Since auditioning for the part in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, Channing Tatum was repeatedly robbed of playing Gambit in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise.

I enjoyed Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, he was the focus of some of my favorite jokes, and some of the movie’s most memorable and badass moments. Because of this, I was thrilled to hear that Channing Tatum is in conversation with Marvel Studios about possibly returning as the hero. However, after recent comments, it seems Tatum may not go it alone in the MCU’s future, so I know exactly which Marvel Comics story should be adapted for his possible solo Gambit movie.

Ryan Reynolds Wants To Be In Channing Tatum’s Solo Gambit Movie

Ryan Reynolds Is An Avid Supporter Of Channing Tatum Continuing As The MCU’s Gambit

Channing Tatum isn’t the only actor who wants his version of Gambit to return to the MCU, as Deadpool & Wolverine’s Ryan Reynolds has also expressed his interest in Tatum’s Gambit living on after the Phase 5 movie. In fact, Reynolds recently posted to his Instagram story in support of this idea, noting that “if [Tatum] needs a Deadpool, [he] can do that.” The prospect of Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum teaming up again for a Deadpool and Gambit crossover movie has me very excited, and there’s one Marvel Comics story that would be perfect for this project.

It’s impossible not to love and root for @channingtatum When he makes a Gambit movie, I’ll return the favour. If he needs someone to carry sandbags, I’m in. If he needs a Deadpool, I can do that. Someone to provide fresh orange slices to the crew, no problem. Name it.

Adapting Deadpool V. Gambit Would Be Great For The MCU

Deadpool V. Gambit Ran For Five Issues Between August & November 2016 In Marvel Comics

Gambit and Deadpool fighting with swords in Marvel Comics Deadpool V Gambit

Between August and November 2016, Deadpool and Gambit were featured alongside each other in Marvel Comics’ Deadpool v. Gambit, a five-issue series by Ben Acker, Ben Blacker and Danilo S. Beyruth. I would love to see this short run adapted for a future Gambit movie featuring both Channing Tatum and Ryan Reynolds, as this could reveal more about Gambit’s history with the Merc with a Mouth. In the comic series, Deadpool and Gambit’s relationship prior to the latter joining the X-Men was explored, with the pair working con-jobs together.

While attempting to swindle an “object of mythical power” from a Chinese businessman, Deadpool and Gambit find themselves embroiled in several predicaments. This is a hugely entertaining storyline that would be great to adapt into live-action: it’s a short and simple story, the focus is entirely on Deadpool and Gambit, and other characters from the Marvel Universe make fun and unexpected appearances. I think Deadpool v. Gambit has all the makings of an exhilarating MCU movie for Tatum and Reynolds, and this story would allow Marvel Studios to continue Deadpool & Wolverine’s themes in Reynolds’ future adventures.

Deadpool V. Gambit Would Continue Deadpool & Wolverine’s Buddy Themes

Deadpool & Wolverine Proved Team-Up Adventures Work Perfectly For Wade Wilson

Cassandra Nova capturing Deadpool and Wolverine in Phase 5

The buddy-cop style of Deadpool v. Gambit, with the two titular heroes banding together for “one last job,” would translate perfectly onto the big-screen. This has already been proven by Deadpool & Wolverine, as the Phase 5 movie made all our dreams come true by bringing together Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine for a team-up adventure. Wade Wilson himself claims to have waited years for the iconic team-up, and we’re all right there with him, so it would be fantastic to see this continue with Gambit in Wolverine’s place.

These iterations of Deadpool and Wolverine had never met before Deadpool & Wolverine , as the versions in X-Men Origins: Wolverine were very different.

Deadpool is famous in Marvel Comics for embarking on adventures with a number of heroes, and battling many villains in crossover storiesDeadpool v. Gambit is part of a long line that includes Deadpool vs. Thanos, Hawkeye vs. Deadpool and Deadpool vs. The Punisher, while the Merc with a Mouth has also famously partnered with the likes of Spider-Man and Daredevil. This presents Marvel Studios with the opportunity to team-up Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool with any number of characters in the MCU, retaining Deadpool & Wolverine’s buddy themes – and Deadpool v. Gambit would be a brilliant place to start.

Deadpool V. Gambit Could Expand The Story Of 1 Upcoming MCU Hero

Marvel Studios Will Soon Reintroduce The Iron Fist To The MCU

Deadpool as Deadfist in Marvel Comics Deadpool V Gambit

As well as putting Deadpool and Gambit front-and-center, this eponymous Marvel Comics run featured several cameo appearances from other notable characters. This included Spider-Man, Daredevil, Morbius, Loki, Man-Thing, She-Hulk, Wolverine, and many more. Perhaps most prominently, however, Deadpool v. Gambit expanded on the mythos of the Iron Fist, and even saw Deadpool himself become enhanced with the power of the Iron Fist, and became known as Deadfist.

I’m uncertain about the future of Finn Jones’ Danny Rand in the MCU, but Marvel Animation’s upcoming Eyes of Wakanda series is set to feature at least one Iron Fist. I reckon this could easily set the stage for a future adaptation of Deadpool v. Gambit to explore the lore of the Iron Fist in much greater detail, perhaps even gifting Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson incredible new abilities. I would love to see this storyline detailed in a solo Gambit movie in the MCU’s future, especially if both Channing Tatum and Ryan Reynolds reprise their celebrated roles.
