The new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer showed a lot more of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, teasing where he comes from and what is the state of his universe.
Deadpool & Wolverine‘s new trailer has teased what happened to the movie’s version of Hugh Jackman’s Logan, and Wolverine’s universe might hold a dark twist. After years of multiple releases, Deadpool & Wolverine brings along a new kind of year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the film is the MCU’s only 2024 movie. However, that is no issue, as every new detail that gets revealed about Deadpool & Wolverine‘s plot keeps looking increasingly exciting. That was cemented when the third Deadpool movie’s first trailer was released, with the footage breaking some impressive records for the franchise and the MCU.
MCU’s Incursions May Explain More About Wolverine’s World In Deadpool & Wolverine
Wolverine’s Past Is Teased In The Trailer
The new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer starts by showing Logan sitting in a bar waiting for his drink. However, the bartender speaks to him harshly, saying that Wolverine is not welcome in the bar — or anywhere — and that he knows that very well. That opening moment is further expanded by a few lines of dialogue from Deadpool and the TVA’s agent Paradox, as well as what appears to be a quick shot of a flashback to Wolverine’s world. Deadpool says that Wolverine’s world “went to sh-t,” while Paradox claims that Wolverine “let down his entire world.”
That is some heavy backstory for Jackman’s return as Wolverine. As the MCU’s Multiverse Saga is in full effect, a prior concept could come back to explain what went down in Wolverine’s world. While the exact issues that led to Wolverine’s failure have yet to be revealed, given that Deadpool & Wolverine features the Void and multiverse concept prominently, the “Incursions” that were introduced in another major Multiverse Saga film — Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — could return to help explain what happened in Wolverine’s universe, and the answer could be quite bleak.
Like in the comics, the MCU’s incursions consist of the collision of two universes, with one or both of them getting destroyed due to it. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed the terrible effects of an incursion, with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange even leaving alongside Charlize Theron’s Clea at the end of the film to stop one. Wolverine’s world might have been affected by an incursion, with Logan failing to help. Given how Deadpool and Wolverine jump through a portal similar to Doctor Strange’s, perhaps he will be present for any possible new incursions in the film.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s TVA Can Shed More Light On What Went Wrong With Wolverine’s World
Agent Paradox Seems To Know Exactly What Went Down
Recently revealed footage from Deadpool & Wolverine at CinemaCon suggested the movie takes place before the events of Loki. That happened due to Mr. Paradox’s line about how the TVA has to protect the Sacred Timeline, which was not a thing after Loki season 2, with Tom Hiddleston’s former God of Mischief watching over the multiverse, allowing new universes to flourish without getting pruned by the TVA as was the organization’s prior operating method. Based on that, the movie could be set back at the time the TVA’s control over the multiverse was at its highest point.
As such, Paradox would be well-versed in any major destruction events across the multiverse. Given how the character is the one to tell Deadpool about this version of Wolverine having let down his entire world, it is safe to assume Paradox knows exactly what went down. In the trailer, Deadpool teases that Wolverine’s dark past will be revealed by a “third-act flashback.” A quick scene of Logan in regular clothes falling to his knees at an ominous location teases that. Wolverine’s world will likely be explored, and the TVA seems like a great candidate for how that happens.
Are There 2 Wolverines In The New Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer?
Many Variants Are Rumored For The MCU Movie
The new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer led to theories among fans that there are actually two versions of Jackman’s Logan in the new footage. The first would be the Wolverine that Deadpool goes to recruit at the bar. The other version of the X-Men character would be the one Deadpool finds in the Void. It would be possible that Deadpool gets sent to the Void and, after having a bloody fight with a Wolverine variant there, realizes Logan’s potential as an ally, then goes to recruit the first Wolverine seen in the trailer.
However, that might not happen. At the bar, Logan gets told by the bartender that he is not welcome anywhere. Later, Deadpool talks to the Wolverine wearing the character’s iconic yellow and blue X-Men costume about his world’s dark fate, with Paradox’s comment about Wolverine having let down his world being directed to the Logan with the costume. The reason why Logan is not accepted at the bar might be connected to whatever happened in his world. Thus, both possible different versions of Wolverine to appear in the trailer could end up being one and the same.
Is Wolverine’s World In Deadpool & Wolverine The Fox Universe?
Fox X-Men Characters Are Confirmed For The Film
The Deadpool & Wolverine trailer suggests that this Logan is a new variant, not coming from the original Fox universe. The trailer shot of Logan falling to his knees in an ominous location with several ancient-looking stones next to him was never part of Fox’s X-Men movies, and Wolverine was also never seen wearing his classic comic book costume in those films. That said, the dark event of his universe could be revealed as the death of the X-Men that was teased in 2017’s Logan.
This way, Deadpool & Wolverine would not be retconning Logan‘s ending, as promised, but rather visiting an earlier point in that Wolverine’s timeline. Multiple characters from Fox’s X-Men movies return in the new MCU entry, including the reveal of villains Lady Deathstrike and Azazel — who appeared in two different X-Men movie timelines — in the new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer. Pyro and Toad from Fox’s X-Men movies will also appear, with heroes like Cyclops, Storm, Professor Xavier, and more rumored to be in the film. With so many Fox characters, Wolverine could come from a different point in the franchise’s timeline.
