Intrigue Unveiled: Lashana Lynch Breaks Silence on Future MCU Plans

Lashana Lynch has revealed more about her appearance in The Marvels, and has expressed excitement about what the future holds for Maria Rambeau.

Lashana Lynch has revealed more about her work with Marvel Studios following her X-Men-related cameo in The Marvels. Lashana Lynch debuted as Maria Rambeau in 2019’s Captain Marvel, introduced as the best friend and sister-figure to Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, who helps her remember her past. 2021’s WandaVision revealed Rambeau passed away during the Blip, though this allowed her daughter, Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, to follow in her footsteps. Marvel Studios’ exploration of the multiverse in the MCU has allowed alternate Maria Rambeau variants to appear, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Captain Marvel and The Marvels’ Binary.

On March 22, 2024, Lashana Lynch spoke to Comicbookmovie.com’s Josh Wilding to discuss her appearance as Rita Marley, Bob Marley’s widow, in 2024’s Bob Marley: One Love, though the conversation naturally shifted onto her appearances in the MCU. Lynch noted that filming her scenes for The Marvels’ post-credits scene took no more than a day, and while the cameo also brought the X-Men into the MCU, she hasn’t yet had any conversations with Marvel Studios about actually joining the team. Lynch did express her excitement about the future, however, suggesting Maria Rambeau variants, perhaps including The Marvels’ Binary, could return.

I mean, even that sentence, I’m like, ‘Am I? That’s not a sentence that’s been put to me at all; we’ve not had a conversation about that. I dipped in for, I think a day. I think I had one day on that film which is wild for it to be so impactful. I was there for a day because I was on Matilda at the time, so that’s wild. I don’t know. I don’t know. I used to find it a little bit of a hindrance to not know as I like to know what’s coming and plan, but I love now that I don’t know. I love that I didn’t know that was happening. That’s something that came across time as a slow plan. Well, for me, anyway. They probably had it planned the whole time.

I genuinely don’t know what’s next, but I think with where the franchise is going, it’s naturally going to be exciting. And I’m excited to see where it goes next.

Where Could Lashana Lynch’s Maria Rambeau Appear Next?

Lashana Lynch as Earth-616's Maria Rambeau in 2019's Captain Marvel

Lashana Lynch hasn’t yet been confirmed to be returning to the MCU as Maria Rambeau or any of her variants, but there are several upcoming projects that could easily include this exciting multiversal character. Following The Marvels’ post-credits scene and the mystery of Monica Rambeau being trapped in another reality, it’s very possible that Lynch will return to portray Maria Rambeau’s Binary, perhaps helping Monica to return to her home reality. Binary is a version of Captain Marvel intrinsically connected to the X-Men, so there is a lot of potential for her to return given the X-Men team’s upcoming debut.

It’s also possible that further Maria Rambeau variants could be shown to be operating as Captain Marvel, following the appearance of Earth-838’s Maria Rambeau as a member of the Illuminati in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So far, Lynch has portrayed more versions of Captain Marvel than Brie Larson herself, so it would be great to see this explored further. It’s possible that flashbacks could reveal more about the MCU’s primary Maria Rambeau, perhaps through an investigation of SWORD. Whatever the future holds for Maria Rambeau after The Marvels, Lashana Lynch’s excitement is certainly a positive sign.
